Unique experience at Lismore Sheep Farm
Bringing a taste of Scotland to Canada
A native of the Isle of Lismore off the west coast of Scotland, John Crawford brought his experience with sheep to
Huron County and, with wife Gillian, offers visitors to the farm a guided tour of sheep farming, information on the
industry and entertainment by a trained sheep dog. An authentic Highland cow and soon her calf, are an added
attraction.
A taste of the farm
Visitors to Lismore Sheep Farm, east of Gorrie, will find 500 sheep and
approximately 750 lambs which will educate and entertain. Owners John
and Gillian Crawford have 14 breeds of sheep to display, pet lambs to feed
and sheepdog routines to amuse.
By Janice Becker
Reminiscent of the hills of Scotland, with
hundreds of sheep and lambs roaming freely
over the heather, the countryside of eastern
Huron County has been transformed into a
home and showplace for 500 North Country
Cheviot crosses and more than 750 lambs.
At Lismore Sheep Farm, just south of
Gorrie off County Road 28, John and Gillian
Crawford have created a working sheep farm
which will also provide entertainment and
education to welcome visitors.
Each Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., from
June 3 until Oct. 7, the Crawfords invite
guests to an indoor presentation which will
feature 14 different breeds of sheep and a
shearing demonstration.
Among the animals in the educational
show are Lincoln, Hampshire, Suffolk,
North Country Cheviot, Dorset, Jacob,
Polypay, Romney, Tunis, Border Leicester,
Corriedale, Scottish BlackFace, Dorset Horn
and Arcott.
The entertainment continues outside as
