Ready for the play An unidentified Brussels player on the slo-pitch squad reaches down for the ball during a contest against Milverton, in the Brussels Crusaders tournament held on the weekend. In the season opener for the Bel- grave Peewees, Blyth came to town. The visitors started off quickly, earning five runs in the first. Not to be knocked out, Belgrave came with in three runs in the bot- tom of the inning as Robbie McGee cracked a homerun and Ricky Buchannan also crossed the plate. After Blyth added two more in the top of the third, Belgrave fought back with four in their half, bringing the score to 7 to 6 for the visitors. Hitting home in the third were Peter Irwin, who slugged a triple, Jim McCracken, Kevin Hopf and McGee. Belgrave took the lead in the fourth, having shut out Blyth in the top half. Justin Howatt earned two RBIs knocking in Jonathan Cucksey and On Tuesday, May 23, the Brussels Pee Wee Boys opened up their Tri-County season against Wingham. The game got off to a promising start, with Mark Kroll and Terry Nichol reaching base in the first inning. Wingham opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first, then the Brussels bats went to work. After Nathan Garland, Chris Mason, Mike Coopei and Jason Armstrong tied the score for Brussels on four hard-earned walks, Kroll knocked in two with a double, which was followed by hits from Patrick Gilkes and Nichol, resulting in two more runs. Wingham took advantage of Having nerves of steel and being vertically-challenged may encourage biting summer bugs to pass you by, according to a leading mosquito researcher. Dr. Cord Surgeoner, an entomologist with the University of Guelph, says a person's size and mannerisms can influence the number of mosquitoes and black flies that take aim for a meal. As a general rule, the larger the individual, the higher the odds that biting insects will pick them out of a crowd. High-strung, fidgety people also tend to be picked on more often because movement is an attractant to bugs, according to Dr. Surgeoner. Of all the summer flyers, a mosquito's sensory skills are the most advanced. From up to six metres away, a mosquito has the capacity to detect a moving target, its color, contrasting images and the carbon dioxide humans exhale. Relaxing on the hammock, then, would appear to have its advantages over a late afternoon work-out mowing the lawn, according to the bug doctor's comments. One of Canada's foremost biting fly experts, Dr. Surgeoner has made a career out of studying the life and times of the mosquito and black fly. From the number of kilometres flown over a lifetime to Gavin Van Camp. Scraping out another run in the fifth, Blyth pulled even, however, Belgrave was not finished. The home team rapped in three in the final end to bring the tally to 11-8. The runs were scored by McGee, Ryan Fear and Tim Robinson. McGee also had a great day on the mound, striking out 10. Blyth retaliated on May 17 when Belgrave travelled to the oppo- nents' diamond. Bringing one or two runs across the plate in each of the six innings, Blyth took a commanding lead before Belgrave could score in the top of the sixth. Irwin blasted a three-run-homer, bringing in Hopf and McGee. The final was Blyth, 8, Belgrave 3. some fielding slips to gain two more runs, but Brussels pulled away in the top of the third. Justin Ruttan and Mason, on base with walks, scored on a long triple off the bat of Armstrong. Four more runs came home before the inning was over, with hits ccrning from Gilkes, Nichol, Joshua Gropp and Garland. Cooper, Armstrong and Gilkes rounded out the Brussels scoring in the fourth inning. The defense held off the Wingham bats, and salvaged a 14-4 victory. Fine pitching performances were turned in by Nichol and Cooper, who combined for seven strikeouts and four walks, while surrendering only four hits. the number of people bitten along the way, the bug doctor is a walking "entomological encyclo- pedia."
