A longtime favourite adventure story of mine, The Jungle Book ***1/2
(Disney - $22.95 or less), gets a 90's update from the folks at Disney. This
new version bears little resemblance to the musical animated film from the
late 1960s and harkens back more to Kipling's original tale. This Jungle
Book is fast paced, gorgeous to look at and superbly acted by a fine cast
that includes Jason Scott-Lee, Sam Neill, Cary Elwes, Lena Headley and
John Cleese. Great fun! (Rated PG)
In addition to the pan and scan version Disney is also making available
a gorgeous letterbox widescreen version.
Also highly recommended is the original version of The Jungle Book
***1/2 (HGV - $14.95) produced in 1942 and starring Sabu. This lavish
technicolor film has the added bonus of an exceptional music score by
composer Miklos Rozsa. (Unrated)
Woody Allen is back in fine form as the writer and director of Bullets
Over Broadway ***1/2 (Alliance), a dark comedy set in the 1920s about a
struggling playwright given the opportunity to direct his own play on
Broadway. Unfortunately complications arise when the Mafia boss who is
financing the production insists that his untalented girlfriend be given a
starring role. Dianne Wiest picked up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for
her work here but its Oscar nominee Chazz Palmenteri who almost steals
the film as a mob hitman with showbiz in his blood. Highly
recommended! (Rated PG-13)
Michael Keaton and Geena Davis star in Speechless ** (Warner), a
surprisingly limp romantic comedy about two political speechwriters
working for opposing candidates. Even though this film only runs 99
minutes it seems much longer. (Rated PG-13)
Much better is an offbeat little film set in 1969 called Pontiac Moon
(Paramount) which focuses on a father (Ted Danson) and son (Eric
Schweig) who hit the road in a 1949 Pontiac trying to match the mileage
of the Apollo XI astronauts. Also in the cast of this interesting film are
Mary Steenburgen and Cathy Moriarty. (Rated PG-13)
Baby boomers in particular will love You Can't Do That: The Making of
A Hard Days Night *** (MPI/SMA - $24.95) a highly enjoyable look at
the Fab Four at a time when they were about to capture the world
spotlight. The one thing I find hard to believe is that almost 35 years have
passed since this charming Beatles film first Wowed audiences around the
world.
Other new releases available this week include The Internet Show ***
(Turner - $14.95), an informative program that explains everything from
modems to e-mail to protocol for new on line users who have managed to
find more than their share of pot holes on the information super highway.
Computer users may also be interested in a new interactive CD-ROM
collection from The Discovery Channel. The titles include Normandy, the
Great Crusade, Wings Over Europe, In the Company of Whales, Beyond
Planet Earth and Sharks.

Recently, Mr. and Mrs. Don
Scrimgeour came to Blyth Public
School to present a cheque for over
$611 earned through the collection
of Scrimgeour's grocery tapes. The
grocery tapes were counted at
lunch hour by students who earned
extra computer time for their
efforts.
While at the school, Don and
Lenore took the opportunity to
view Grade 7/8s and Grade 2/3s
using various computer
programmes.
All the students would like to
thank Mr. and Mrs. Scrimgeour for
their generosity. The money raised
will be used for the purchase of
computer software.
GRADE 1-2
Grade 1 is enjoying their study of
animals and farm vocabulary in
French. They are also learning
some new facts about the farm.
This week Grade 1 and 2 are doing
some French book making
activities to go with their farm
animal unit and the Grade 2 unit on
instruments.
GRADE 8
Last week Grade 8 also made
flower arrangements for Mother's
Day in art class. Thank you to the
Little Village Crafts store in
Londesborough for her contribution
of flowers to our projects. The
arrangements were all very unique
and colourful.

supporting us.
Friday, May 5 was a very special
conclusion to Education Week at
Grey Central. Grandmas, grandpas,
moms, dads, friends, and
neighbours visited the school to
spend time with the pupils. They
were met at the door by senior
students who directed them to the
various classrooms to meet their
hosts.
Besides touring the school,
learning computer programs and
sharing story books with their hosts
they were also entertained with
skipping and fitness demonstra-
tions, singing, French presenta-
tions, poetry reading and line
dancing.
Members of the Steering
Committee conducted tours of the
outside classroom as well. A
special ceremony was held in
honour of Mr. Sterling Hood who
donated the bush property to our
school when it was originally built.
Mrs. Hood and her son and his
family attended. The bush has been
named the "Hood Woods."
Shannon Clark wrote this poem,
which she presented to Mrs. Hood,
in honour of the occasion.
Mr. Hood was very good
To us he gave the woods.
Now it is full grown
The birds have a home
And we have a place to play.
We do nature studies,
We go there with reading buddies
And we play Predator/ Prey from
day to day.
But when we're all done
We lie in the sun
And when we get hot we seek
shade.
You've passed away
But we remember you today.
So thanks for Mr. Hood for the
,woods!
Another special guest, invited by
.Iodi Semple, was Canadian author,
Gisele Ireland. Mrs. Ireland spoke
to Mrs. Irwin's Grade 5/6 about
writing. She also presented each
class member with an autographed
copy of her book, Charlie Munsey
and Lonesome.
On Monday, May 8, the
educational committee from the
Huron County Board of Education
visited Grey Central where they
held their regular meeting. They
were able to tour the school
grounds and to hear and see singers
and skippers.
Also, Grade 6 students from
Standish, Michigan arrived to
spend a couple of days with their
Grade 6 students, who are their
penpals.
Everyone from Grades 2 to 8 are
busy practising for the Grey
Central Track and Field day on
May 24. Hopefully it will be a nice
sunny day.
Congratulations to Steven Boyer,
Grade 4, who was named "Bowler
of the Year" for the Bantam
division at the Molesworth's
Bowling Lanes.
FEATURING
MRS. WHITMORE AND
MRS. COLQUHOUN
By Jordan Van Veen
and Scott Cox
Mrs. Irwin and Mrs. Whitmore's
classes performed the play "Capt.
Castaway's Captives" for the
opening show. Konrad Hammel
made an excellent captain and I'm
sure all of us realize we need to
make sure we pay attention to our
Rules of Grammar or we'll have to
walk the plank!
STANDISH, MICHIGAN
By Christie Snider
and Stacey Smith
Our class hosted a Grade 6 class
from Standish, Michigan. We were
all excited to meet these American
neighbours. Monday evening was
spent playing five pin bowling at
Molesworth. Tuesday was a day for
touring Blyth Theatre and
Goderich. On Tuesday evening we
each entertained our penpal then
they left for home Wednesday
morning. We had a fun time.
ESSENCE OF CANADA
By Rodney Dammrier
On May 11, Katie Kuepfer and I
went to Howick Central school for
the "Essence of Canada"
enrichment program. There we
studied cities in Canada. We also
got the chance to problem solve
and create our own communities.
Overall, I think it was a nice
experience and I'm looking forward
to going again.
