Champ
F.E. Madill student Cory
Bragg took four firsts at the
recent track meet to tie with
two others, for Midget champ.
He took the 100m, 200m,
4x100 relay and long jump.
High...higher...higher yet!
The Madill Mustangs track and
field athletes were off and
running... and jumping... and
throwing. The overcast, rainy
weather did little to dampen the
spirits of the 60 eager, hardworking
teammates as they competed in the
1995 Huron Perth championships.
The action began May 3 when
the pole vaulters, coached by Bob
Campbell, held a competition at
Madill. True to tradition Madill
vaulters accumulated 44 points.
This year's team is well balanced
with strong competitors in jumps,
throws, sprints and distance events.
The 50' long, 30-seat Big Bike
Ride for Stroke will pedal along St.
Christopher's Beach in Goderich on
Sun day, May 28 to raise funds and
awareness for stroke, Canada's
most neglected disease.
Teams of 29 riders will
participate in the second annual Big
Bike Ride for Stroke on Sunday,
May 28 at the foot of West Street.
The Big Bike Ride for Stroke is a
pledge-based, community event
that's novel, wacky and encourages
team spirit. The Big Bike will be
touring across the province from
May to October.
The Foundation plans to raise
$700,000 from 500 rides across the
province to support stroke research
and health promotion programs.
The Huron Chapter is actively
seeking teams of 29 riders to ride
the Big Bike and anyone interested
in assembling a team is asked to
contact the chapter office in
Goderich at 524-4440 for further
information.
Last year's Big Bike Ride for
Stroke exceeded its goal of $4350,
raising over $6,000. This year's
goal is $8,350.

On May 9, 10 the main
competition was held in Goderich.
This year 15 distance runners
under the able coaching of Rob
DeWever all qualified for WOSSA
and one of them, Dennis Lubbers,
was able to win triple gold in the
800m, 1500m and 3000m.
In the jumping events, coached
by Sharon Askes, former Madill
OFSAA medalist, now Lakehead
graduate, 20 athletes gained points
for the team. Kris Kreiger was able
to win double gold in the Senior
High Jump and Long Jump and
Madill athletes swept first place in
five of the six long jump divisions.
The sprinters coached by Steve
Merner, also tasted success. One of
the most exciting races of the day
for Madill fans was the Midget
Boys' 100m final when Madill
runners Cory Bragg, Greg
Montgomery, and Matt Smith
crossed the finish first, second and
third, then joined with Mike Nolan
to run the 4 x 100 relay to set a new
Huron Perth record.
In throws, also a traditionally
strong area, coached by Betty Shaw
and Maureen Lisle there were 13
first place finishes and two new
Huron-Perth records set by sisters
Mary and Julie Lisle in the Junior
and Senior shotput events.
The Mustangs track and field
team wrote a new chapter in
Madill's history by making a sweep
of all divisions, bringing home the
pennant for Midget, Junior, Senior
Boys; Midget, Junior, Senior Girls;
Overall Boys, Overall Girls,
Overall Boys and Girls. Never
before have all divisions been won
by one school.
At the day's end, individual
champions were named for each
division. These athletes must win
three first places in order to win the
title. This year Madill had eight
individual champions.

Bulls name
new coach
The searching and interviewing
completed, the Brussels Bulls have
a new head coach.
Jim Bridges of Stratford has been
selected to lead the team through
the 1995-96 season.
A coaching veteran of 18 years,
Bridges has worked both AA and
AAA teams in communities such as
Bowmanville, Orangeville, Strat-
ford and Port Stanley.
As a Stratford coach, he earned
the Coach of the Year Award.
He is an excellent teacher and
that is what the team was looking
for, says Bulls' executive member
Wayne Todd.
Bridges is currently coaching the
AAA Saugeen City Platers, a minor
league bantam team, in a summer
hockey program.
S. Conley gets
basketball
scholarship
Dedication and hard work have
paid off for one Ethel area student
with a scholarship to an American
university.
Shawn Conley, 19-year-old son
of Doug and Nancy Conley, a stu-
dent at Listowel District Secondary
School earned a basketball scholar-
ship to the Florida Institute of
Technology.
Standing 6' 9", Shawn will be an
excellent addition to the team. "He
is an excellent student, has tremen-
dous ability and a tremendous
amount of potential," says Andy
Russo, coach of the Florida team.
Aside from playing basketball for
the team, Shawn will be enrolled in
the biology program.
He says he chose Florida Tech
largely because of the academic
possibilities as well as not limiting
his athletic potential as Florida is a
Division H school.
Shawn scored more than 1,200
out of a possible 1,600 on the
American SAT (entrance exams).
Florida Tech was just one of
seven schools which offered Shawn
a scholarship, including George-
town, Portland and Montana.
Hoping for a career in the NBA,
Shawn says he isn't banking every-
thing on it. "I graduate in the year
2,000. Anything can happen."
