The news from

Dianne McCallum and Marilyn
McDonald opened the UCW
meeting last week with a short
worship service. The Day Thou
Gayest was the hymn sung with
Margery Huether at the piano.
Patty Banks introduced Rev.
Bruce Cook as the guest speaker
for the evening. He told the ladies
of some earlier prophets such as
Eli, Samuel and Jeremiah, who
heard God's voice, who dreamed
dreams and saw visions.
It was Jeremiah who told the
people to dream dreams. All we
have to do is lift up our voice and
ask and do not be afraid because
God is with us, he said. Bruce gave
some statistics about how the
United Church in the 60s was
booming and now in the 90s it isn't
doing quite as well. He believes
however, that the UCW, which is
1
the largest women's group in
Canada, is a powerful group that is
best suited to help redesign the
church to meet the social, spiritual
and emotional needs of the people.

There was a slightly smaller
crowd at the Walton dance this past
Friday but the dancers had a lot of
fun. Door prize winners were Ian
Wilbee and Philip James. There
will be one more dance, June 2
with the Tiffins.
Phyllis and Emerson Mitchell
were married at the Walton United
Church manse May 7, 1949.
Patty Banks had seen pictures of
their wedding and decided that it
would be a great idea to update the
pictures. She posed the couple in

Planting for tomorrow
The students of Walton Public School took some time out
of class May 5, to plant trees provided by the Ministry of
Natural Resources. Steve Bowers offers a few
instructions as Quina Gowan, Grade 2, pats the soil
around the tiny seedling.

Walton Public School news
J. Rickert wins contest
As reported about a month ago
the school had a 'World Book -
Snuggle Up and Read' campaign
where kids were to find sponsors to
support them financially for every
book they read. With this past week
being Education Week the staff
decided it would be the perfect time
to award the kids their reading
certificates and medals.
Parents, students and staff
gathered in the room used as a gym
and there Mrs. Crocker told how
the school had raised almost
$1,000.
She then showed everyone the
different encyclopedias that the
school was able to buy with the
money.
She congratulated all the students
on their great reading efforts and
encouraged all the students to
continue the great work. Hats off to
Ricky and Andy Pethick who
raised the most money.
Each teacher then called their
students forward and presented
them with certificates and Mrs.
Crocker gave them medals.
Earlier that morning the students
watched a video called, 'Planting
Trees for Canada - Planting Trees
for Me.' They learned how to plant
trees, the reasons for planting trees
and different types of trees.
Steve Bowers from the Ministry
of Natural Resources brought all
kinds of saplings for the students to
plant along the far edge of their
playground. Steve (along with
helpers Andy and David Pethick)
showed them how it was to be done
and the kids all gave it their best
shot.
The Kindergarten class this week
learned what kinds of plants they
were growing. They are now
learning how to graph the plants'
growth.
The Grade 2s made potato
critters. They cut the top out of a
potato and filled it with dirt and
planted grass seed. The class also
made a huge cake poster with
construction paper candles. They
wrote on each candle what they
liked best about WPS.
The Grade 3s have been learning
all about magnets. Tina Smith
made an airplane magnet. She
made a runway out of paper and
then made a paper airplane and
fastened a paper clip to it. She then
took the magnet under the runway
and when it found the clip she was
able to move the airplane all over
the runway.
They did various experiments
and the highlight was using the big
six-volt battery (electro-magnet).
They learned that wires sure do get
hot and that it magnetized the nail
that they had used.
The Grade ones had a wonderful
time with Jeff McGavin and Neil
Williamson as the two showed the
children the different farm
machines.
This year the kids seemed to be
aware of the 'safety stickers' on all
of the new equipment.
The class has also started their
designing projects. They are
learning what all goes into.
designing things. They have to
have a plan etc. The kids are
building houses, barns, tractors and
other things.
In the Grade 4 room they had a
drawing contest. They could draw
whatever they desired and the class
all voted Jillian Rickert's picture to
be the winner.
The school playground is shaping
up thanks to the hard working crew
at McGavin's, who have brought in
some sand and set up the soccer
ball posts. Putting in the basket ball
standards will be the next job.
