Leading the list is Corrina, Corrina *** 1/2 (Alliance), a fine drama set in the 1950s and centering on a maid (Whoopi Goldberg) who brings laughter and love to a widower (Ray Liotta) and his withdrawn daughter. Corrina, Corrina also features a fine supporting cast that includes Joan Cusack and the late Don Ameche. (Rated PG) Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee ***1/2 (Turner/Malofilm) is part of Turner Broadcasting's company-wide initiative, The Native Americans, Behind the Legends and Beyond the Myths. This poignant film, based on the best-selling autobiography by Mary Crow Dog dramatizes a young woman's coming of age during the controversial and violent occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota by Native Americans in 1973. (Originally made for television - Unrated) Also available, to coincide with the release of Lakota Woman is the six episode program The Native Americans **** (Tumer/Malofilm) which presents tile history of more than 500 tribes of Native Americans that existed for centuries prior to European contact. Outstanding! Barcelona *** (Alliance) is director Wilt Sillman's first feature film since the critically acclaimed Metropolitan a few years back. The witty film follows the adventures of two rather obnoxious American cousins as they try to grapple with life and a bevy of beautiful women in Spain during the 1980s. (Rated PG-13) The one movie to avoid this week is Calendar * (Alliance) another dull and pretentious film from Canadian director Atom Egoyan. The plot centres on a photographer whose wife falls in love with their translator during a photo shoot in the Armenian countryside. Yawn! (Rated PG) While the major video labels command most of the marketplace, a few smaller companies busily continue to turn out first rate tapes and laserdiscs. Lumivision Corporation is a laserdisc company which continues to offer rare restored film classics plus specialty programs and releases from the 1MAX film library. One of their latest releases is The Brave One ****, an all but forgotten movie from 1956 which tells the story of a Mexican peasant boy and his love for a prized bull who is destined for the arena. This beautifully photographed and highly enjoyable film won an Oscar for best original story which was credited to one Robert Rich, a pseudonym for Dalton Trumbo who had been blacklisted in 1947 at the hands of Communist witchhunters. Trumbo's Oscar went unclaimed until the Academy finally presented it to him in 1975. Lumivision's widescreen restoration of The Brave One is from a stunning 35mm technicolor cinemascope print with Victor Young's memorable score, along with the entire stereo soundtrack being given-special care. Highly Recommended! Other new and unpreviewed releases you'll find at your local video store include Andre (Paramount) the story of a seal who adopts a human family. (Rated PG) Dream a Little Dream (Columbia/Tristar) is an alleged comedy about magic sunglasses. (Rated PG-13) Finally, Virginia Madsen stars in Blue Tiger (Columbia/Tristar), a thriller about a woman who seeks revenge against the men who killed her young son. (Rated R) video !I:91.X.
