THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1995. Morning Star hosts euchre By Bonnie Gropp Something old has captured the attention of some Grade 6/7 stu- dents at Brussels Public School and teacher Dale Wanless couldn't be more pleased. It seems that during a history class, Mr. Wanless mentioned how disputes between armies in the past were often settled by a game of chess. "The next thing I knew four students came to me with the idea of starting a club and it has just sort of exploded," he said. Erla Koch was worship leader at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship on Sunday, Jan. 29. The Teen Chal- lenge Team brought the messages for the service. Two of the team members gave their life stories and told of the miraculous way God is working in their lives. The team's Pastor gave the message on Daniel, the man of courage. Daniel did not compromise when it came to his faith. He remained faithful to his God, at all costs. High officials wanted to get rid of Daniel. Darius Fourteen members and one visitors attended the Friendship Club held at Maple Villa on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. Jeanne Ireland presided at the piano for the opening song which was followed by "0 Canada". The president Sarah Stephenson contributed two readings. Members were reminded of the visit to Huronlea for the monthly birthday party on May 9 at 2 p.m. The club will provide lunch and entertainment for the residents. A request from the board of The enthusiasm is contagious; shortly after getting organized the Grade 6/7s issued an invitation to the Grade 5/6 and Grade 8 students to join the club. "In just a few short weeks we have gone from the origi- nal four students to about 30 mem- bers." The entire effort has been gener- ated by the students, including the special achievement awards that have been designed and printed. Mr. Wanless and teacher, Rudy Hooftman supervise the club at lunch and during recesses. "Which was in power and held Daniel's life in his hands. God closed the mouths of the lions to save Daniel, for Daniel was innocent before God. Darius could hardly believe that Daniel was still alive after spending the night in the lions den. "Satan cannot put us in any situation in which our Lord is hidden from us. Whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's," the pastor said. Often we lose hope when we fail, he said. We draw others down with us in our negative attitude. education was received requesting volunteers to assist with training of the children to read. It was decided that more information on this request is required. A request was also received from the Day Care Centre in Wingham to attend in March and provide a two-hour entertainment program. You couldn't get a quieter group of kids," Mr. Wanless says nodding towards the engrossed players. Their interest in this game has generated another idea in that Mr. Wanless has decided to teach it as part of the math curriculum. "But what's really great about this is that the kids have done it all themselves. We (the teachers) have stepped back from this and its suc cess is not due to adult involve- ment. You have to really give credit to the kids." Confidence in God makes the difference. The everlasting arms. of God are always beneath us to catch us when we fall in any situation. Like Daniel, we must be men of courage. Following the Christian Educa- tion service, the Teen Challenge team joined the Youth and youth leaders for fellowship over lunch in the gymnasium. Some of the youth attended a Winter Retreat at Camp Shalom, Cambridge. The Grade 7/8 enjoyed swimm- ing at Vanastra for their monthly activity on Saturday.
