A Brussels Bulls defenseman tangles with one of the Wiarton Wolves in front of the home team's net as the second period saw things heat up in the Brussels end after a 2-0 shutout of the visitors in the first. Brussels kept their edge, however, and skated away with a 4-2 victory. Bulls aim for second place Two goals by Nate Bender was the difference as the Brussels Bulls squeaked out a 4-2 victory Sunday against the Wiarton Wolves in the teams' only game of the weekend. Bender also helped to set up a goal by defenceman Jim Beyer. Pete Mulder chipped in with a goal and an assist, and Peter Ryter played a strong game racking up three assists. The win gives the Bulls an impressive record of 9-5-5, good for 23 points and fourth place in the Western Junior C standings. The race for second, however, is still wide open with four teams in the hunt. The Hanover Barons cur rently hold down that position with 26 points, but have played one more game than the Bulls. Walkerton is jus't a point ahead of Brussels, but again the Bulls have played five fewer games. The Wingham Ironmen have slipped to Crusaders improve record, 7-5 The Brussels Crusaders improved to seven wins - five losses - two ties and moved into sixth place after weekend WOAA Senior hockey action. Friday night in Southampton the Crusaders scored six unanswered third period goals for a 7-7 tie with Lakeshore. Brent Vandenakker scored twice, with Greg Murray, Corey McKee, Tom McDonald, Dean Wheeler, and Tim Fritz scoring singles. Three of the goals were scored in 15 seconds while Vandenakker's tying goal came with two minutes remaining. After rallying to tie, the Crusaders managed to kill off the Lakeshore powerplay for the final 1:48 of regulation lime. Derek Cooper slopped 23 shots for lhe tie after replacing Pat Blyth Tykes lose 16-2 to Clinton The Blyih Tykes faced a tough Clinton team on Dec. 17, and were defeated 16-2. Wright's helmet came off from the force of the check cutting the shifty centreman for seven stitches around the eye. Referee Blake Moggy handed Weir a five minute penalty for boarding. The Bulls' next action is Friday night when the club travels to Kincardine. The expansion Bulldogs have only two wins in 19 games. The Bulldogs return to Cronin late in second period action. Sunday night, Greg Murray, Tom McDonald and Ron Strome all enjoyed a five point game enroute to a 13-1 win over the Clinton Radar. Brussels opened with a five goal first period, then added seven more in the second. Trevor Fortune stopped 21 shots, losing the shutout late in the second period. Three members of the Bulls were selected to the Western Junior C all star team Centre Nate Bender, defenceman Jim Beyer and goalie Ryan Fisk will be in the lineup against the Stratford Cullitons on Saturday, Jan. 7 in Kincardine. The Bulls held the team's annual Christmas draw Sunday. Fritz Ryter, Wes Alexander, Mike Holzworth and Patti Alexander won the four prizes. Response to the Bulls' hockey school, which got underway Monday, has been strong with between 40 and 50 Novice and Atom age players taking part. The coach of the Kitchener Rangers, Geoff Ward, will be one of the guest instructors. McKee and Dave Murray each scored twice with singles by Greg Murray, Tom McDonald, Corey McKee, Tim Fritz and Mike Bettles. The Crusaders travel to Elora Wednesday, Dec. 28 and Durham on Friday, Dec. 30. As well the Crusaders are scheduled to play the 1988 Grand Champion Crusaders on Friday, Jan. 6 at the B. M. & G. Campbell earns hat trick The Belgrave Atom Houseleague hockey team played host to Wing ham on Dec. 10, in an exhibition matchup. Justin Campbell and Chad Cook combined to create a scoring duo for the home team. Campbell earned a hat trick, popping in a goal in each frame. In the first and sec ond, he was assisted by Cook, with Garrett Knight also notching an assist on the second netter. Wing- ham managed to stay even with the home team, pocketing two of their own. In the third, Campbell scored his third with an unassisted goal then aided Cook in their final goal of the game. Wingham also netted two in the final frame, drawing the game to a four all tie.
