The Citizen, 1994-12-14, Page 9w=The news from Compiled by Patty Banks Phone 887-6860 40 people partake of Christmas supper Rev. Randy Banks opened the UCW Christmas pot luck supper by saying grace, then close to 40 people enjoyed the delicious feast. The basement had been festively decorated by Audrey Hackwell, Karen Hoegy and Kathleen Williamson. After the meal and cleanup, Phyllis Mitchell began the evening with an opening.prayer than a 'Christmas Service' was delivered by Dianne McCallum (narrator), Barb Durrell (Innkeeper), Gloria Love (Narrator), Marilyn Mc Donald (Shepherd), Betty McCall (Joseph), and Berva Watson (Mary). The service was inter spersed with Christmas carols played by Marie McGavin. The business part of the evening was then dealt with. Non- perishable items were collected and they will be given to the Huron County Christmas Bureau in Egmondville (drop off centre is Bethel Bible Church). The group of ladies also welcomed two special guests that evening, Janie Ewing (a long-time Walton resident) and her daughter Beth Read. Janie said that it is always such a treat to come back to Walton. A special gift box was given to Rev. Banks and his family for Christmas. The next meeting will be Jan. 7 at 1:15 p.m. I must apologize to Lome Wernham for spelling his name wrong in last week's paper. I made sure that I had his last name spelled correctly and then I went and got his first name wrong. Sorry Loren, I mean Lome. As I promised last week to have further information on the new business in Walton (Walton Small Auto and Engine Repair) I went and talked to the owner. His name is Derek Pilatzke and he is from Brussels. He had a similar business in Brussels but needed more space, thus the shop in Walton. He is open Monday - Friday from 8 - 5 and Belgrave man receives conviction A Belgrave area resident was convicted in Goderich court Mon day, Dec. 5 of a drinking and driv ing offense. Goderich OPP charged Keith Hardy, 54, on Aug. 27 when they went to investigate a single vehicle accident. Mr. Hardy told the police that he had had five beers and thought his nephew might be in the car. (There was no one else in the vehicle.) Though Mr. Hardy sustained minor injuries in the accident, the court was told that he refused medi cal attention. Both breathalizer readings were 200 mg of alchohol in 100 ml of blood. Provincial Court Judge R.G.E. Hunter fined Mr. Hardy $850 in addition to the one year driving prohibition. this friendly lad welcomes everyone in to check out his business. Walton Public School kids played to a full house on Dec. 8 and were glad that they held the concert in the Church so as to accommodate the crowd. There were a few children who entertained the crowd before the show began by playing music on the piano and violin. The kindergarten classes did their Rudolph and Jingle Bells dances and sang Christmas is Coming and S-A-N-T-A. Grade Is opened the show with their play, 'Santa's Sleigh'. Grade 2 had a little presentation called, 'Children around the World'. Grade 3 did a musical called 'Three Wee Kings'. Grade 4 had fun performing, Boo-Bear and the Night Before Christmas. After the classes had delivered their plays the school choir, led by Mrs. Scott and accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Vandendool, sang two selections; When A Child is Born and A Whole New World. Mrs. Crocker thanked everyone for coming out and hoped that they all enjoyed it. She thanked all those that volunteered to help out v“ith the concert. The Senior and Junior Kinder garten classes have a pet hamster named Bob in their class. Since it gets cold in the school on weekends Mrs. Viven suggested that the kids take turns taking him home. This weekend a very excited Cassandra Banks got to take him home. He is very friendly and I never thought that one could form such an attachment to a rodent but she sure has as well as the kids in her class. A surprise 50th birthday party was held for Alan Brown this past week. His children, Sharon, Richard, and wife Mandy, and Gavin, and wife Roseann and grandchildren put on the party. Mandy made the cake and Alan's grandson Nathan made a Peterbuilt truck out of icing for it. Alan enjoyed all the family and friends that showed up for the party. Happy Birthday Alan. Banks called all the children forward and read them part one of the story, 'A Gift of Oranges', by Beatrice Fines. His sermon was entitled, 'A Merry Repentance'. Wondering what kind of a Chrispnas card he would get from Paul or Zephaniah, two of the three Biblical persons in the lectionary readings today, Rev. Banks figured that they would be uplifting and triumphant and proudly displayed on the mantle. However, if John the Baptist sent him a card it may go as follows - Season's Greetings. In this season of joy, my hope and prayer is that you will repent! You brood of vipers! The axe is laid to the root of the trees and every tree that does not bear fruit will be cast into the fire, His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear the threshing floor and to gather wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will bum with unquenchable fire. Have a merry repentance and a new year of changed behaviour." Rev. Banks wondered if he might not take John off his Christmas card list.
