Christian
school hosts
auction
Much of the focus of attention
this week at the Clinton and
District Christian School is on what
has become a very popular and
profitable Talent and Services
Auction. This auction is to be held
this week, Friday at 7:30 p.m. in
the gymnatorium of the school.
The auction, begun some seven
years ago, has become an event
held each year in the end of
November. It is organized by a
fund raising group called the
Auxiliary Committee.
Principal of CDCS Mr. Clarence
Bos says, "The elected board of
directors encourages fundraising in
order to raise money for the school.
Much of the fundraising is done
simply to lower the tuition rate."
CDCS is a school supported by
108 tuition paying families, each
with varying abilities to pay for
children's education. With 227
students in Grades K-8, 11 teachers
and a principal, a strong resource
program using many parent
volunteers as well as a part-time
resource teacher, and a budget that
tops $850,000 per year, the school
is considered by many to be both
efficient and cost effective.
Mr. Bos points out that the
school's cost per student is about 50
per cent less than the average for
public schools across Ontario. He
adds that, despite the determination
of the school to cut costs where
possible, many parents who pay
tuition to CDCS end up experienc
ing a heavy financial burden. They
pay to own and operate the school
without any assistance from the
Ontario government. Board mem
bers are quick to point that out.
Even municipal taxes levied for
educational purposes are not
available for use by CDCS. Parents
who support a school must direct
their municipal taxes to the Public
Schools in their areas. The result of
this is that such parents pay for two
education systems, while their
Christian convictions lead them to
believe that they should use only
the Christian School System.
"This is really an unjust system
of double taxation," says the
principal.
Mr. Bos says he seldom hears the
parents complain about the cost.
"We have a group of parents here at
CDCS who are happy to pay for
what they see as the privilege to
have their children educated in a
school system which supports the
same beliefs and value structures as
do their parents. These parents
believe that they are getting value
for their money. They may
complain that many of their
neighbours do not understand that
Christian Schools are good for
Canada as well."
This 1994 auction is expected to
raise between $15,000 and
$20,000. Donations of talents and
services are from parents and
supporters, as well as from many
local businesses and industries.
Presently there are about 110
items on the "Live Auction” list
and another 60 items on a unique
"Silent Auction" list. These lists are
available throughout this week at
the school or Friday during the
auction. Refreshments are available
compliments of the Auxiliary
Committee throughout the evening.
