New book features former Brussels resident
Joan Chandler, formerly of
Brussels, is a featured theatre artist
in a book recently published in
New York. Playing Boal: Theatre,
Therapy, Activism examines the
practice of a form of drama known
as Theatre of the Oppressed (or
TO).
Ms Chandler, Artistic Director of
the Kemble based company,
Sheatre, and an internationally
recognized facilitator of TO, is
included in this text as one of a
panel of Canadian practitioners
discussing their experiences and the
transformative potential of theatre.

Summer busy at Huronlea
By Mary Gibbings
Program Director
August was another busy month
at Huronlea. It was also a nice
month to do anything or plan
anything.
We started the month by having
Phyllis Mitchell come on Aug. 2
and 16 at 10:30 a.m. to play the
violin. She always brings someone
with her to play the piano.
Everyone gathers in the sitting
room to enjoy the music. .
The Residents Council met in the
Fitness Room at 10:30 a.m. on
Tuesday, Aug. 9. Also the same
afternoon, the monthly birthday
party was held in the sitting room.
The Blyth Swinging Seniors put the
program on and provided the
cookies for the afternoon.
It was also a busy day for the
residents, tenants of the apartment
and staff who went on an enjoyable
trip to Parry Sound.
On Aug. 10 at 10:30 a.m. the
lobby of Huronlea was filled with
residents and visitors to hear "The
Huron County Young Players
Musical Review" from Grand Bend
Theatre. A special thank you goes
to the Brussels Lions Club which
largely from a theatrical approach
that activates passive spectators
into becoming "spect-actors" -
engaged participants rehearsing
strategies for personal and social
change. Originated by Brazilian
theatre activist Augusto Boal, this
vision of theatre has won accolades
and disseminated into global
circulation.
Ms Chandler's participation in
this book stems from a meeting
with the New York editors, Jan
Cohen - Cruz and Mady Schutzman
in 1991 at the international
conference of Theatre of the
Oppressed in Paris, France marking
sponsored this event.
Don Dunbar was here on Aug. 17
to entertain the residents by playing
the piano.
Surprise - surprise as it was pet
day at Huronlea. No one knew
what the pets were going to be until
the truck drove in with a horse
trailer behind it. Yes Donna
McComb and "Butch" Elliott from
Clinton were here with their
miniature horses. All the residents
had a chance to pet the horses and
ask questions. It was a treat for the
residents to be able to be so close to
the horses. Then outside it was
riding time. Another horse was
harnessed onto a cart to take the
residents who wished to have a ride
around the front parking lot.
In the month of August the
following ministers held the
Sunday services at 2 p.m. in the
chapel: Pastor Les Cook, Blyth;
Rev. Paul Acton, Brussels; Rev.
Mary Jane Hobden, Belgrave;
Captain Scott, Wingham.
We would like to wish a speedy
recovery to anyone who is ill. To
families who have lost a loved one
the 20th anniversary of Boal's
introduction of the form. Chandler
had been invited by Boal to present
Shcatre's video-documentary about
TO, "Shelter Me: The Power of
Popular Theatre."
"I was overwhelmed by the
amount of TO work going on here
in Canada," states editor
Schutzman. Canada has an
unparalleled reputation in the
field." So she invited a group of
Canadian artists to a round table
discussion to leant why, and how
they approach and practise TO

If you wish to know what is
going on at Huronlea, drop into the
home and get your monthly
calendar. We welcome you to
attend any of our programs.

consists not in the outward things
we do, but in the inward thing we

Ms Chandler admits that doors -
have opened in very unexpected
places. Following a recent
performance at the Michigan
Women's Music Festival an
enthusiast showed up at the stage
door. She had just read the book.
"It's a tremendous honour to do the
work, and a great pleasure to be a
vehicle for understanding this
special kind of theatre."
The book presents a collection of

theatre hot spots as London, New
