De Jong______Phone 887-9335 Trailblazers get in gear Grey and McKillop Townships have joined in partnership with Bluewater Recycling Association. By introducing home pick-up of recyclable materials - more materials will be diverted from the landfill. The Bluewater Recycling Association is able to handle more types of recyclable materials and has strong market commitments. In 1989 the committee initiated one of the first recycling systems in the area with a depot style three compartment bin to handle the basic rccyclables of glass, cans and newspapers. Assistance in pro moting the program was received from local Women's Institutes, the Federation of Agriculture and others and the program was well received. Over fime the program evolved to handle the colour sorting of glass and the inclusion of plastic soft drink bottles. Advancements in recycling technology and the development of markets increased the amount of material that could be recycled and the committee felt the basic depot system was somewhat obsolete. The committee met with represen tatives of the Bluewater Recycling Association several times and after careful consideration of the service provided by the Association, recommended to both councils that the municipalities become members. The Bluewater Recycling Kinsmen burn mortgage For the people of Belgrave and community, the evening of Sept. 10 was a special night. Almost 500 residents gathered at the community centre to witness the Kinsmen bum the mortgage for the centre. Renovation work begun on the community centre in the spring of 1991, with the purpose of improv ing the arena and providing a meet ing place for 150 people. The $399,463 project was sched uled to be paid off in five years, but the work of the community com pleted payments on the debt in four. They reached their goal through fundraising projects and donations: the Kinsmen calendars from '91, '92 and '94 raised $60,000, $44,(XX) and $20,000 respectively; Kinsmen donations over the years were $60,253; piggy bank profits, Association, a non-profit organiza tion is based out of Huron Park and serves over 40 municipalities in four counties. One of the most important issues to the committee was the sheer volume of materials that could be added to the recycling program, items such as boxboard, cardboard and especially a wide range of plastics. Other services provided by the Association include waste audits to businesses, household hazardous waste days, etc. Bi-weekly collection started in Grey on Sept. 1 and Sept. 8 in McKillop, but the committee didn't stop there. Effective December 1994 the landfill site will only be open on the first and third Saturday of the month, for the months of December, January, February and March, which results in significant savings for the landfill budget and the landfill itself. The committee felt that residents would recognize that they are paying for the recycling service through their tax dollars and will therefore maximize their use of the service. By fully utilizing the service and practising other waste reduction measures such as composting, the committee believes that people will not have to go to the landfill site as often and therefore felt it could easily justify the reduced hours of the site, especially during the winter months. $12,000; corporate donations, $6,344; private donations, $33,000; Morris Township, $10,000; East Wawanosh Township, $10,000; provincial grant, $117,666; GST rebate, $22,000; Centennial com mittee donation, $2,200 and seniors, $2,000. Guest speaker Bruce-Grey MPP Murray Elston said, "Belgrave is a stronger community because of groups like the Kinsmen Club. Small communities still have the drive to make people count." Huron MPP Paul Klopp congrat ulated the Kinsmen for "doing something" right to get the project paid for "ahead of lime." The mortgage was burned by Kinsmen Club President Paul Mof fatt and former presidents Arne Spivey of the finance committee and Paul McKee of the building committee. As well, effective Sept. 24, the recycling bin will be removed from the landfill site and all materials picked up by the Bluewater Recycling Association will be banned from the landfill site. By banning recyclable materials from the landfill site and reducing the hours of the site, the committee wants to ensure maximum diversion of materials through the bluebox pickup. Recycling has been accepted in the municipalities for five years and the committee doesn't antici pate many problems with residents accepting the changes. Anyone with questions or com ments about the recycling program is encouraged to attend an open house being sponsored by the Walton Women's Institute at the Walton Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Representatives from the Bluewater Recycling Association will be in attendance to answer questions.
