Second cut cattle sell lower
Sales at Brussels Livestock for
the week ending Sept. 9 were: fed
cattle, 557; cows, 187; veal calves,
178; sheep and goats, 150;
stockers, 1,050; and pigs, light run.
The to quality cattle sold fully
steady at Brussels Livestock with
the second cut cattle selling $2
lower. Cows sold steady.
There were 428 steers on offer
selling from $88 to $94 to the high
of $105.50. A steer consigned by
Chris Van Loo, Clinton, weighing
1,320 lbs. sold for $105.50, with
his total offering of 5 steers
averaging 1,292 lbs. selling for an
overall average of $99.21. Five
steers consigned by David Rowles,
Brussels, averaging 1,288 lbs. sold
for an average price of $95.26 with
sales to $101.50.
A black steer consigned by
Beetonia Farms Ltd., Beeton,
weighing 1,340 lbs. sold for
$101.25 with their total offering of
13 steers averaging 1,278 lbs.
selling for an overall price of
$91.88. Forty-one steers consigned
by Cunningham Farms, Lucan,
averaging 1,333 lbs. sold for an
average of $91.13 to the top of
$98.75. Eighteen steers consigned
by Wayne O'Brien, Centralia,
averaging 1,314 lbs. sold for an
average price of $89.55 to the high
of $89.55.
Twelve steers consigned by
Harry Schnurr, Walkerton,
averaging 1,138 lbs. sold for an
overall average of $91.90 to the top
Terpstras host open house
Look way up
Visitors to Acre T. Farms, owned by Joe and Miriam
Terpstra, took a good look at the new silo and hog finishing
operation. The new structure covers 39,000 square feet
and is one of three new facilities.
Between 1,200 and 1,500 people
attended the open house held at
Joe and Miriam Terpstra's Acre T.
Farms on Sept. 10.
The Terpstras were celebrating
the opening of their third hog fin
ishing operation bam which incor
porates advanced technology and a
new method of management.
Mr. Terpstra says, "Most of the
technology which is being used in
this bam has been available since
the late 1980s and we utilized it in

to $96.75. Two Limousin heifers
consigned by Keith Elder, Chesley,
averaging 1,095 lbs. sold for
$96.75 with his total offering of 19
heifers averaging 1,157 lbs. selling
for an overall average of $88.87.
Two heifers consigned by Clayton
McClure, Seaforth, averaging 925
lbs. sold for an average of $95.62.
Twenty-six heifers consigned by
Maple Ridge Farms, Brussels,
averaging 1,102 lbs. sold for an
average price of$89.77 with sales
to $95.75. Sixteen heifers
consigned by Deweerd Farms,
Stratford, averaging 1,126 lbs. sold
for an average price of $90.77 to
the high of $93.
There were 187 cows on offer
selling from $50 to $67 to the high
of $78.50. A cow consigned by
Dale Anderson, Listowel weighing
1,660 lbs. sold for $73.50. A red
cow consigned by Keith Carter,
our first two operations."
"The greatest change for this
facility will be the management of
the hogs."
He says, "The bam will be filled
all at one time and then totally
emptied before we begin again."
The 39,000 sq. ft. bam is com
pletely computerized and has a liq
uid feed system.
The Terpstras run a 2,700 sow
operation with a nucleus of 900 and
the rest multiplying for other farm-

consigned by Wayne Gingerich,
Zurich, weighing 640 lbs. sold for
$112.

to $146; 80 to 94 lbs., $101 to
$111; 95 to 109 lbs., $98 to $100;
and 110 lbs. and over, $88 to $95.
Sheep sold $13 to $50.

71 lbs. sold for an average price of
$138.76 with sales to $142.
Stockers: steers, 400 - 499 lbs.,
sold $108 to $141; 500 - 599 lbs.,

$93.50 to $116.50; and 800 lbs. and

week stay, the piglets are brought
back to the finishing facility.

Beef competition
set for Sept. 149 28

Beef Specialist for Huron County
The Huron County Beef Herd
Improvement Association will be
holding their 4th Annual Beef
Carcass Competition Sept. 14 and
28.
This two part program is
comprised of a live evaluation
night on Sept. 14 in Brussels
followed by a wrap up night in
Seaforth at the Fairgrounds starting
about 7 p.m.
There are 33 entries in this year's
event and each one will be
photographed in live and carcass
form to show beef producers what
lies under the hide. The slide
presentation will be part of the
wrap up night on Sept. 28.

Laycraft, general manger of the
Canadian Cattlemen's Association,
who will present some of the
results of the recent Beef Carcass
Cutout Study that was completed
last winter.
Prizes will be awarded to the top
finishers in each of the steer and
heifer classes. There will be an
exhibit area featuring the
representatives that serve the beef
industry, along with their products.
Roast beef on a bun will be served.
All bee producers are welcome.
