The Citizen, 1994-09-14, Page 19Brussels Livestock report Second cut cattle sell lower Sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending Sept. 9 were: fed cattle, 557; cows, 187; veal calves, 178; sheep and goats, 150; stockers, 1,050; and pigs, light run. The to quality cattle sold fully steady at Brussels Livestock with the second cut cattle selling $2 lower. Cows sold steady. There were 428 steers on offer selling from $88 to $94 to the high of $105.50. A steer consigned by Chris Van Loo, Clinton, weighing 1,320 lbs. sold for $105.50, with his total offering of 5 steers averaging 1,292 lbs. selling for an overall average of $99.21. Five steers consigned by David Rowles, Brussels, averaging 1,288 lbs. sold for an average price of $95.26 with sales to $101.50. A black steer consigned by Beetonia Farms Ltd., Beeton, weighing 1,340 lbs. sold for $101.25 with their total offering of 13 steers averaging 1,278 lbs. selling for an overall price of $91.88. Forty-one steers consigned by Cunningham Farms, Lucan, averaging 1,333 lbs. sold for an average of $91.13 to the top of $98.75. Eighteen steers consigned by Wayne O'Brien, Centralia, averaging 1,314 lbs. sold for an average price of $89.55 to the high of $89.55. Farms, owned by Joe and Miriam Terpstra, took a good look at the new silo and hog finishing operation. The new structure covers 39,000 square feet and is one of three new facilities. Between 1,200 and 1,500 people attended the open house held at Joe and Miriam Terpstra's Acre T. Farms on Sept. 10. The Terpstras were celebrating the opening of their third hog fin­ ishing operation bam which incor­ porates advanced technology and a new method of management. Mr. Terpstra says, "Most of the technology which is being used in this bam has been available since the late 1980s and we utilized it in of $97.75. There were 187 cows on offer selling from $50 to $67 to the high of $78.50. A cow consigned by Dale Anderson, Listowel weighing 1,660 lbs. sold for $73.50. A black veal consigned by Bill Devos Jr., Bluevale, weighing 650 lbs. sold for $114. A black calf consigned by Wayne Gingerich, Zurich, weighing 640 lbs. sold for $112. Lambs: 50 to 79 lbs., sold $134 to $146; 80 to 94 lbs., $101 to $111; 95 to 109 lbs., $98 to $100; and 110 lbs. and over, $88 to $95. Sheep sold $13 to $50. Forty-seven lambs consigned by Dave Watson, Belgrave, averaging 71 lbs. sold for an average price of $138.76 with sales to $142. Stockers: steers, 400 - 499 lbs., sold $108 to $141; 500 - 599 lbs., $116 to $139; 600 - 699 lbs., $85.50 to $124; 700 - 799 lbs., $93.50 to $116.50; and 800 lbs. and over, $91 to $112. Heifers, 300 - 399 lbs., sold $103 to $131; 400 - 499 lbs., $92 to $145; 500 - 599 lbs., $78.50 to $109.50; 600 - 699 lbs., $80 to $108; and 700 lbs. and over, $84.50 to $108. ers. After only 18 days, the young pigs are removed from their moth­ ers and placed in an off-site nurs­ ery. Beef competition set for Sept. 149 28 By John Pickering Beef Specialist for Huron County The Huron County Beef Herd Improvement Association will be holding their 4th Annual Beef Carcass Competition Sept. 14 and 28. This two part program is comprised of a live evaluation night on Sept. 14 in Brussels followed by a wrap up night in Seaforth at the Fairgrounds starting about 7 p.m. There are 33 entries in this year's event and each one will be photographed in live and carcass form to show beef producers what lies under the hide.
