Kim was honoured as the Huron County Dairy Educator last Wednesday night at a special reception hosted by the Huron County Milk Committee at the Belgrave Women's Institute Hall. She is the second person in Huron to be named Dairy Educator since the Dairy Princess competition was revamped to concentrate on educating primary school children about milk and the dairy industry. "I love working with kids," says 18-year-old Kim, who is the oldest daughter of David and Dianne Baan of RR 3, Walton. For the past year, she has been working part time at the Seaforth Co-operative Child Care Centre where she discovered many children didn't know where milk came from. "I was really surprised to realize the children didn't know much about the dairy industry. I'd like to leach them about all the work there is on the farm and what all happens to milk before it reaches their table." As Dairy Educator, she will certainly get the opportunity. In the next year, she will be attending over 20 schools. Kim will also be promoting the dairy industry with cheese displays in grocery stores and by attending local fairs. Besides her Dairy Educator duties, Kim will be attending Conestoga College this fall to earn her Early Childhood Education diploma. She also helps out on the family farm. This past year, she did the milking almost every night. Her parents have a 40-head milking herd of mostly purebred Holsteins. Although working with children is her calling, Kim says she also enjoys dairy farming, particularly when hard work earns results, she says. Kim isn't the only new face within the Huron County Dairy Educator program this year. Brenda Bridge of Tiverton has resigned as co-ordinator to pursue new interests after years of service. Her enthusiasm brought new life to the program which has evolved into an important public relations tool for dairy farmers in the county. The new co-ordinator's are sisters Lisa Boonstoppel-Pot of RR 3, Auburn and Tanya Verburg of RR 1, Auburn, both of whom are former Huron County Dairy Princesses. Anyone interested in having the Dairy Educator at their event can call Ms Boonstoppel-Pot.
