OYC is the flagship performing

22 are chosen to become part of the
choir. The choristers meet for 11

intensive training period, where
they have the opportunity to study
with talented choral musicians and
vocal coaches.

disperses. It meets again for a
concert tour the final week of
September; each year this tour
takes these young ambassadors of
choral music to a different region
of the province. In addition to the
Blyth performance, full-length
concerts are planned in Listowel,
Stratford, Windsor, London, and
Toronto.
Each year, the choir's artistic
staff is chosen for their excellent
service and prominence in the field
of choral music in addition to their
experience as educators. The staff
for the 1994 choir includes Lee
Willingham, the conductor of the
Bell'Arte Singers in Toronto. In
addition to his work with the
Bell'Arte Singers, Mr. Willingham
is curriculum co-ordinator for
music with the Scarborough Board
of Education and a vice president
of the Ontario Music Educators'
Association.

When asked about themes in her
most recent work, Jo Manning,
former award winning printmaker,
now painter, writes about
Kernighans Bush near the 'Little
Lakes' outside Benmiller where she
loves to draw. "Cattle used to graze
here so that the trees rose from a
bare forest floor littered with tree
limbs. Now the trees are skirted
with baby ash. It is a quiet and
haunted place where faint light
filters down and bird calls echo. It
is also very near one of the
proposed landfill sites for Huron
County," she said.
Bill Creighton, preparing for his
second exhibition and studio tour
with the Huron Society of Artists,
speaks of the creative process and
the details of getting to know his
subject matter intimately, "being on
the site, sketching, feeling the
mood, observing the lights and
darks, noticing details in the curl of
a leaf or the turn of a head."
Inspired by an "August in
Newfoundland", Puck Merkies'
images in watercolours, oil, pastels,
and pen and ink, reflect her
favourite subject matter - "rocks
and water... forests and
wildflowers. I make no attempt at
detail but capture the atmosphere of
the moment. I seek out the
wilderness untouched by humans,
to hear the silence, to feel the
environment, to smell the earth, to

Mr. Willingham will be joined by
accompanist Ian Sadler, whose
freelance career as a concert
organist has placed him on
international stages, and vocal
coaches Lynn Blaser and Darryl

for their fifth and third years
respectively, combine solo
performing careers with private
teaching studios at the University
of Toronto and the University of
Western Ontario.
The Youth Choir is looking
forward to its appearance in Blyth
and feels confident that, with the
combination of 40 exceptionally
talented young musicians, the
hosting provided by the Blyth
Festival Singers, and the
opportunity to visit a new
community for many of our
members, we will all be made to
feel welcome and "at home."

In the shared studio of Anne
Eekhoff Hamilton and Tristan S.
Eekhoff, a joint project has been a
"driving force" in their lives over
the past several months. Each of
them has painted five large pieces
and two smaller ones "dealing with
the family. There is a certain
sadness as we near the completion,
almost as though our children are
once again leaving home."
New to th e group this year is
Peter Wilde, recently featured at
the Blyth Festival Art Gallery.
