The Citizen, 1994-08-31, Page 22PAGE 22. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 1994. Can she beat it? Lisa Blake tries to leg out the throw, while Corrina Stephenson, one of the BMG Pool staff members is ready for the tag. Lisa is one of the swim team members, who along with Junior Lifeguard staff, were treated to a fun day last Thursday to end the season. By John Schedler Director John G. Avildsen (Rocky and Power of One) delivers another great film with 8 Seconds **** (Alliance), the true story of Lane Frost the youngest ever world champion bull rider and rodeo superstar. This film is a sure crowd pleaser and the cast headed by Luke Perry (Beverly Hills 90210), Stephen Baldwin (Threesome) and Cynthia Geary (Northern Exposure) is outstanding. Highly recommended. (Rated PG) Also worth a look is Greedy *** (MCA/Universal) a very entertaining comedy about a group of vicious backstabbing relatives who plot to grab their wealthy uncle's fortune when his health begins to fail. Michael J. Fox, Kirk Douglas and Nancy Travis headline a very good cast that also includes Phil Hartman and Ed Begley Jr. (Rated PG-13 - some rough language) Although Serial Mom ** (HBO) will not be for every taste, if you like black comedy then this latest exercise in bad taste from director John Waters just might be your cup of tea. The story features a so called 'perfect' housewife (Kathleen Turner) who turns into a knife-wielding killer when she becomes upset. The satire does work quite well in some spots, but for the most part I found the film to be just a bit too silly. (Rated R - very rough language) A first rale cast that includes Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Winona Ryder and Antonio Banderas highlight House of Spirits ** (C/FP), an epic, but slow moving tale of a South American family which covers a period of 50 years from the 1920s to the 1970s. (Rated R) One of the belter compilation tapes to emerge from television's golden age is Ed Sullivan: The Best of Broadway ***1/2 (Disney - $19.95) which features songs from popular Broadway shows with original cast members. This tape, which is only volume one, includes Richard Burton and Julie Andrews from Camelot, original cast members from Oklahoma with the orchestra under the direction of Richard Rogers, songs from My Fair Lady, Man of a La Mancha, West Side Story and many more. Among this week's other new and unpreviewed releases you will find Chasers (Warner) a reworking of the Jack Nicholson Classic The Last Detail. The film stars Tom Bercnger and William McNamara as two mismatched military policemen who are assigned the job of transporting a gcorgcous female prisoner (Erika Elcniak). Directed by Dennis Hopper. (Rated R) Two college freshmen discover the benefits of being politically correct in PCD (Fox), a topical slapstick comedy which has been described as an Animal House for the 90s, if that's your idea of a good time. (Rated PG-13) Up and coming TV star Paul Reiser headlines in Mr. Write (MCA/Universal) a romantic comedy about a playwright who falls in love with an actress who already has an obscenely rich boyfriend. A recent study conducted by Purdue University kinesiology professor Darlene Scdlock says that a round of golf is excellent for weight control. Walking and pulling the clubs for 18 holes - about six kilometres burns about 1,060 calories for an average 150 pound person. Sedlock maintains this is the equivalent of running 10 km. It's all welcome news to Bob Lean, the head golf professional at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, who believes golfers should sweat over more than par putts. "For too long, golf has been excluded from the theory adopted in other sports that physical ability can be enhanced through exercise," Mr. Lean says. "Golfs no different than any other sport. Exercise, a good pre-game stretch for instance, can enhance your performance." Mr. Lean says the stomach and lower back muscles are the most important ones for golfers to keep toned. Manual resistance exercises (isometrics), which like stretching exercises are designed to be done in the home or the office, will improve your strength and endurance. Simple exercises using dumb bells and ankle weights are also advised. "Most people don't consider the golf swing an athletic movement," says Mr. Lean stressing that people should see a physician before beginning any exercise program. "The point is that if you d.o some stretches you'll be far more flexible and able to freewheel through the swing." Mr. Lean has been the pro at Glen Abbey for four years and figures he's taught over 3,700 golfers. "I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who wouldn’t commit 10 minutes a day, three times a week, to drive the golf ball a few years longer," he says. "It's just a matter of informing golfers on the benefits of being fit." PGA Tour pros have caught the fitness bug. When the Tour descends on Glen Abbey for the Bell Canadian Open in September, many players will begin their day with a morning run and stretching session. "Today's tour players understand the importance of staying in shape. It's pretty competitive out here and being fit is an advantage, " says Ralph Simpson, a physical therapist with the PGA Tour. "The popularity of staying toned has increased over the years - both with the general and sports specific populations." Happy 50th Anniversary!
