The Citizen, 1994-08-31, Page 11Belgrave earns 1 win in midget tournament The Tara Midget Boys won the Ontario Amateur Softball Associa­ tion Provincial Championships, after an exciting weekend of ball in Belgrave and Bluevale this past Saturday and Sunday. Tara claimed its first win at 9 a.m. against Wroxeter with a 6-0 victory. This moved them on the play Goderich, who had defeated Hagersville in a tight 3-2 race, which was played at 9 in Bluevale. Opening ceremonies began at 11. Taking part Morris Reeve Doug Fraser, Doug Schultz, representing East Wawanosh Twp., Belgrave and District Kinsmen President Paul Moffatt and the OASA Con­ venor Ted O'Hara. Doug Gamiss, the Huron County Board of Education trustee for Morris delivered a memorial tribute to Kevin Rintoul, who was killed this summer. Kevin had been involved in minor sports in Bel­ grave during his lifetime. Also present for the opening cer­ emonies was the tournament com­ mittee comprised of groundsperson Ken Hopper, advertising and pro­ motion Niel Edgar, chairperson Larry Robinson and co-chair and MC Lloyd Michie. The next games were at noon, when Amherstburg was mercied 12-0 by St. Clements and the home team of Belgrave came away victo­ rious after 10 innings against Smith Falls. The final score was 3-2. At 2 Wroxeter got a second chance, defeating Hagersville 6-4. Smith Falls got a win defeating Amherstburg by 8-2. At 4 p.m. Belgrave was put out by St. Clements 8-5 and Tara moved on after defeating Goderich 4-2. In the next round at 6 p.m. Wrox­ eter put out Goderich defeating them 13-7, then in a rematch with Smith Falls, Belgrave was eliminat­ ed after losing 4-2. Sunday morning was the first go round between Tara and St. Clements who would be battling for the title. Tara disappointed St. Clements with a 5-1 victory. Wroxeter and Smith Falls were . the next contenders with Wroxeter coming out way ahead in a final score of 13-3. This pitted them against St. Clements, who defeated them to again face Tara in the semi-final. This time St. Clements came out ahead 5-4, but as this was a double knock out tournament they had to play again. Tara won with a 4-0 shutout to claim the provincial championship. A ' HI Nice try The Belgrave Midget catcher Peter Gusso was out on the tag by the Smith Falls second baseman, Steve Streight, but the home team went on to win the game in the 10th by a score of 3-2. The game was part of the 1994 Midget 'C' OASA Provincial Championships held in Belgrave this past weekend. The trophy went to Tara. Stallions capture A title Wayne Pegeles' "Stallions" took home the 'A' Division Champion­ ship from the Brussels Crusaders annual Co-ed SloPitch Tournament held on the weekend. The Stallions outscored their opponents 57-20 including a 13-5 decision over Coops of C4th in the tournament ending game Sunday night. Higgys Devils, who gave up only 10 runs in their last three games, won the consolation with a 10-2 win over Poles 'n Holes of Atwood.
