Guests attended from By John Schedler Leading off the new releases is On Deadly Ground ** (Warner), the directorial debut of butt-kicking action star Steven Seagal. It's hard to believe that it look five writers to come up with this predictably dumb story that features Seagal as the indestructible hero battling an evil oil company president played by Michael Caine in a performance that is truly awful. On the plus side On Deadly Ground does have numerous spectacular explosions and loads of unintentionally funny bits of dialogue. (Rated R - Very rough language) The 1960s was a turbulent period in the social life of North American society and, I guess, the world in general, but as the decade closed one event brought the planet together if only for a short time. The landing of Appollo 11 on July 20, 1969 and Neil Armstrong's words, "That's one small step for a man and one giant leap for mankind", as he stepped on the surface of the moon, were the culmination of a fierce competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. Marking this occasion Moon Shot **** (Turner - $19.95) is a four hour documentary told from the perspectives of Alan Shepard, the first man in space, and Deke Slaton, one of the original seven NASA astronauts. Moon Shot includes never-before-seen footage, stories and photos from both the NASA archives and the astronauts' personal collections. Recommended. Charles Procter, uncle of the bride was the Master of Cere monies. This program features sketches which were originally broadcast live on the Dumont Television Network in the early 1950s. Not to be confused with the lost episodes discovered in Jackie Gleason's vault in the 1980s, these earlier sketches pre-date Gleason's CBS series and contain some casting surprises. Most people know the character of Alice as it was played by Audrey Meadows, but in these sketches it is Pert Kelton who spars with Gleason's Ralph in the first shouting match the Kramdens ever had. Additionally, Elaine Stritch makes her one and only appearance as Trixie, a role that was recast with Joyce Randolph as Ed Norton's wife. Art Carney's role in the very first Honeymooners sketch was as a policeman, and it wasn't until a few weeks later that he appeared as Ralph's friend and neighbour Norton. Snag Werris, a long-time gag writer for Gleason, salvaged these kinescopes from being destroyed, by bribing mailroom workers with bottles of whiskey. These kinescopes were discovered in a closet at the Werris home only after his death. This program is not just an interesting artifact from the early days of television, but is very funny as well. Among the other new and unpreviewed releases available this week is the sci-fi sequel, The Hidden II (Columbia/Tristar) which features an alien being who returns Uy Earth in search of a new human host.
