The Citizen, 1994-07-20, Page 2A golden day Helping out Michelle and Darcey Cook spent some time with dad, Steve, helping hime sell draw tickets at the Huronlea Bake Sale and Tea on Thursday afternoon. There was a good turnout with many of the yummies disappearing early. Steve is an employee at the home. The proceeds from the day are going to offset costs for a residents trip to Parry Sound on Aug. 9 and 10. The residents will be staying at the Jolly Roger Inn then will be taking a cruise on the Island Queen before returning home. Residents enjoy busy June Herman and Georgina Garland of Brussels celebrated their 50th anniversary on July 17 with an open house. The couple was married during a 48 hour leave from the air force for Mr. Garland so the family felt a two day celebration to mark the 50th was in order. A barbecue was held on Saturday. Guests come from far and wide to honour local golden couple By Mary Gibbings Program Director June was a very exciting month at Huronlea. On June 3 the following senior citizens visited Huronlea, Londes- boro Happy Gang, Gorrie, "Come Alive Club"; Fordwich, The Young At Heart; and Bluevale Senior Citizens. One June 8 the Blyth Swinging Seniors, Seaforth Senior Citizens Club, Brussels Friendship Club and Wingham Happy Gang Seniors visited. On both days a barbecue lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, beverage and dessert was served after which there was entertainment in the front lobby. We were pleased to have about 150 seniors visit Huronlea for these special days. Thanks to the enter­ tainers, who helped out and volunteer Dave Goodland, who did the barbecuing. It was also our pleasure to have Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fisher from Bluevale celebrating their 61st anniversary with us. Jack also received the Senior Citizen of the Year Award in Toronto on June 7. Congratulations to both Jack and Margaret. The regular Monday sing-a-long group entertained on Monday afternoons in the chapel. June 2 the "Glee Club" met at 2 p.m. with Leila, Lucy and Bob. Every Friday is bingo lime in the Fitness Room. With the help of volunteers B.J. Helen and Roy this a very popular program. June 5, Rev. Cam McMillan, Brussels United Church led the service in the chapel. June 7, at 10:30 a.m. Phyllis Mitchell led the sing song with many old time songs. June 12, Rev. Paul Acton, Brussels Anglican Church led the church service. The monthly birthday party was held on June 14 at 2 p.m. Betty Campbell entertained on the piano. Residents celebrating birthdays were William Levey, Myrtle Jacklin, Margaret Sweeney, Elmer Lewis, William Craig. Don Dunbar entertained on the piano on June 15 in the front lobby. Thursday, June 16 was a very busy day. In the morning at 10:30 a.m. it was residents' council meeting in the fitness room. In the afternoon it was fresh strawberries, cake and whip cream for our Strawberry Social Hour. Dave Goodland volunteered his time to help with this program. We were also pleased to have Lome Mackenzie to entertain on the piano and also his singing of the favourite songs of our residents. Sunday, June 19, Rev. McAvoy, Melville Presbyterian Church led the service in the chapel. On Monday it was off to Goderich for a picnic at the beach and pizza party as well. Tuesday, June 21, Phyllis Mitchell entertained the residents at 10:30 a.m. Lots of lively music was enjoyed by all. On Wednesday, June 22 we had the pleasure of having Dorothy and Harold Steffler entertain. We will be calling this program "The Old Tunes" from now on. Thursday at 2 p.m. it was hymn­ sing devotional with Leila, Lucy and Bob. As you see June was a very busy month along with all the other programs in the home. We wish a very happy birthday to all celebrants in the home and in the apartments. To our residents who are in the hospital a very speedy recovery. To the families who have lost a loved one our sympathy goes to each of you. We would like to welcome Olive Sproul, Opal Harris and Bob Skirton to Huronlea, and to our Highland Apartments we would like to welcome Bea Yates and Glenna Stephens.
