Tour takes you past many heritage homes
Return to its roots
Stores on Seaforth's Main Street were restored to their original Victorian
elegance through a revitalization project. A walking tour of Seaforth will
show many other examples of fine architecture.

constructed in 1920 of tongue and groove
clapboard siding and the front wall is
actually a series of sliding doors.
A war memorial erected after World War
I is located at the west end of the park.
If you cross to the west side of Main
Street you will come upon theDunlop
Residence at 55 Jarvis St. Built in 1875 it is
a fine example of a later "farmhouse". It has
Gothic overtones with narrow vertical lines,
finely traced bargeboards and trim details.
North on Jarvis to Market, then right to
High will take you to the Box Residence at
57 High St. This is an interesting Queen
Anne style home with a comer turret and
the home of William Gray, one of the
partners of Gray, Young and Sparling Salt
Works.
At 19 Sparling St. is the Pietsch Res
idence, built in 1895. Constructed of red
brick it is notable for its ornamental gables,
curved cast stone window heads and curved
stained glass window heads.
Go north to 131 Goderich St. where you
will find a large two storey white brick
house with strong Italianate elements
providing a fine example of a wealthier
domestic architecture. The Carroll
Residence was built in 1875, then an
addition was added in the 1880s.
Further up the street at 148 Goderich St. is
the Sheperd Residence, built in 1889. It is an
example of late 19th Century Queen Anne
Revival architecture. Of particular interest is
the steep, well maintained slate roof
incorporating red and green slates. Also
notable are the brackets under the soffits and
the red granite sills. Of interest is the fact
that the house was the home of Andrew
Young McLean, a prominent Seaforth
resident, whose family resided in the house
for over 100 years.
Go north on Adams then right onto James
where you will find the Carnochan
Residence. Located at 123 James St., the
clapboard and frame house was built in 1873
and is hyped as one of the most fun and
eclectic homes in Seaforth. The brochure
states, "With its steeply pitched roof, tacked
on dormers, asymmetrical floor plan, narrow
vertical lines, fine trim details, stained glass
windows and overall architectural
playfulness the Carnochan Residence
provides a fanciful example of Victorian
'cottage' architecture — quite a departure
from the more formal and traditional 'house'
of substance." This home was saved from
demolition in an 11th hour rescue.
Turn south onto Helen and you'll find the
Cornish Residence, one of two portions of
the original house built on the main street in
1870. The house is detailed with Neo
classical and Gothic Revival overtones.
Noteworthy are the double bays, raised
portico, transom porch and eave detailing
and the well maintained Victorian grounds.
The Doig Residence is located at 98
Goderich St. Constructed in 1850 is is an
example of a modest Ontario farmhouse,
believed to be one of the first brick
residences in Seaforth.
The Lorne Villa Apartments are housed in
a late 19th Century home. Located at 92
Goderich St. this building is typical of the
Victorian era in urban South Western
Ontario. It was built between 1886 and 1890
and was divided into apartments in 1964.
Continue east to Church St., where you
will find Maplewood Manor, formerly the
public school, which was constructed in
1867. The building was completely gutted
and renovated in 1986 and now serves as a

characteristic wood shingles The building
was built in 1927.
Continuing north you will find the Walker
House at 38 High St. which is touted as
being one of a kind in Seaforth. The house,
built in 1864 has a striking front verandah,
which extends the entire width of the house
and second storey porch. It was the home of
Alexander Cardno, who built the opera
house on Main St.
The McIver Residence is located at 41
John St. A unique set of three Scottish-style
dormers and clapboard siding this 1874
home has maritime vernacular overtones.
West of this home, also on John St., is St.
Thomas Anglican Church, a white clapboard
and frame building with tower and spire
built in 1863. This was the first permanent
place of worship in Seaforth.
Continue west until you come to 23
Sparling St. The Hansen House is a mixture
of stylistic elements representing a good
example of mid-19th century domestic
architecture. Built in 1855, it was originally

Businesses come and businesses go
so there are few that, like Elliott
Insurance Brokers Ltd., can boast of
nearly 80 years' operation by one family.
The fourth generation of the Elliott
family is now playing a major part in the
running of the business. Today, Rick
Elliott and his father John operate the
business that was started in 1910 by
J. H. R. Elliott.
The founder came to Blyth and
purchased The Blyth Standard, a book
and stationery store, and two small
insurance agencies. Later, the
newspaper was sold and the two
insurance agencies were amalgamated.
Gordon Elliott joined his father's
business in 1936 and operated in
partnership with J. H. R. until the father's
death in 1955. Gordon said he got into
the business by accident.
"When I came out of Grade 13 in 1934
I worked at a garage. I started in
insurance when my father needed
someone to help him with the business.
I came because of necessity and I've
never been sorry for it."
In turn, Gordon's son John joined the
company in 1959, becoming a licenced
agent in 1961. “It was my desire to go
into the insurance business when I was
going through school," John said. "I
decided in Grade 9."
In 1983 the fourth generation, Rick
graduated from Mohawk College after
switching to insurance administration
from business accounting.
Elliott Insurance Brokers Limited is
now represented by four qualified and
registered insurance brokers - John
Elliott (1961), Rick Elliott (1983), Barb
Snell (1982), Lisa Elliott (1992) and
two support staff - Betsy Allan and
Jackie Lantinga.
