Agencies, landowners plant trees Local environmental groups and landowners have formed partner ships to increase the tree cover in the area. There are four major partners working with the Ausable- Bayficld Conservation Authority toward this goal; the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), Tree Plan Canada, private landowners and five area nurseries. The MNR subsidizes tree planting costs for those seedlings purchased from MNR nurseries. An example of such a grant is being co-ordinated from the Wingham Area office under the name Project Tree Cover. This program was designed to help landowners reforest their land in rural Ontario. Just this spring, the Wingham Area MNR office arranged for the planting of 400,000 trees for 66 landowners. Project Tree Cover provides technical expertise to assist the landowner in preparing the reforestation project, tree seedlings, site preparation, tree planting and maintenance services, as required and project monitoring to ensure quality control. Private landowners in Huron and Perth counties interested in improving at least five acres of idle, marginal or highly-erodible farmland are invited to contact the Wingham office of the MNR. Through Tree Plan Canada, the National Tree Foundation gave the ABCA grants to be used on three different projects. The first was a subsidized tree planting service for 80,000 trees. The ABCA planted seedling trees on private and municipal lands by machine and hand planting through this program. Due to the announcement and advertisement of this subsidy, the number of trees planted by the ABCA rose by 30,000. Secondly, partial funding was given for planting 4,250 trees by ABCA crews on the Dinsmore Management Area recently acquired by the Conservation Authority in Hay Swamp. The third project occurred at the Parkhill Conservation Area. Here, 200 students from seven area schools worked to plant 9,000 trees of which the cost was partially covered by the National Tree Foundation. Private landowners helped to increase the tree cover in the area by purchasing trees through the other groups. Two-hundred and three landowners picked up seedlings and planted the trees by themselves while the ABCA planted trees for 43 landowners. These landowners paid $125/1,000 trees to have their trees planted by ABCA crews, as well as 10 cents/seedling. Five local nurseries were distribution centres for larger stock trees. Two-hundred and fifty-eight people ordered trees through the ABCA and picked up the stock at their local nursery for windbreak and roadside plantings. These nurseries allowed people easier access to the trees, creating greater local participation in the windbreak and roadside planting programs.
