Warm weather makes this a welcome event as the firefighters go face to face in a wet
confrontation.

The Shriners not only ride the parade route and visit with
the youngsters but they are also going to be cooking fish at
the Rutabaga Festival. The Shriners Fish Fry is a highly
anticipated event.
IwS r
Industry has humble start
From mechanic to rutabaga
entrepreneur, Russell Dougherty
brought a unique and still-thriving
business to Blyth.
After fire destroyed his and part
ner Joe Hamilton's Drummond
Street garage and International Har
vester equipment sales yard in
1935, the pair moved to Queen
street.
On the present day site of Camp
bell Transport, the garage was
rebuilt and Russell Dougherty
began waxing rutabagas there a few
years later.
Within five years, Mr. Dougherty
had established a separate waxing
plant near the CPR station. The
plant was soon processing crops
from as far away as Exeter and
Walkerton.
In 1951, Mr. Dougherty invented
a precision seeder which would
allow the seeds to be dropped indi
vidually thus eliminating the time
consuming job of thinning plants
from rows too heavily sown.
During the peak season, 150 peo
ple would be employed by the
Blyth factory and 15 would remain
during the winter, trimming 1500-
1800 bushels per day.
In the early 1960s, a local farmer
who had been growing and pro
cessing rutabagas from his 70 acre
operation in a rented bam, bought
Mr. Dougherty's plant.
George Hubbard now owns the
industry which ships rutabagas
across North America.
