5th Annual Rutabaga Festival E
Digging up the roots of the Rutabaga Festival
The roots of the Blyth Rutabaga
Festival took hold in February of
1990, when an idea sparked by
local merchants the previous fall
was taken to the public.
A fun event to be held annually,
the idea of rutabagas as a theme
was discussed and as more and
more madcap possibilities rolled
out of the members the focus began
to take hold.
When the idea was taken to the
February meeting of Blyth council,
councillors got right in the spirit of
things laughingly suggesting that
councillors could be attired in a
rutabaga suit for the event.
While the intent of the festival

there was reason to at least be
respectful of rutabagas and Blyth.
The G.L. Hubbard plant exports
rutabagas all over North America
and is a sizeable local employer.
After meeting with interested
parties early in March 1990, it was
decided that the first Blyth Rutaba
ga Festival was a go for the second
last weekend in June.
It was felt at the time that the fes-
rival would support the rural com
munity, a major part of Blyth.
Enthusiastic support for the idea
had come from Mr. Hubbard who
donated rutabagas for the sporting
and cooking events to be held in
conjunction with the festival.
The festival atmosphere was to
straight through until Sunday.
When the awaited weekend
arrived even the rain couldn't
dampen the spirit of participants,
who turned out in droves for every
event.

Though Friday night's Gong
Show had to be moved due to rain,
there were at least 500 people out
to watch their friends and neigh
bours perform.
There were 80 entries in the
cooking contest and 100 entries for
the first parade Blyth had seen in
years.
Three hundred were fed at the
pancake breakfast and 153 young
anglers were on hand for the fish
ing derby.
Jongerbonger to entertain kids
Where do you hide the food you
don't like?
How do you deal with a bully?
These questions and many more
we be answered through the enter
taining music of Jongerbonger,
appearing for the first time at the
Blyth Rutabaga Festival.
Harry Jongeren of Hagersville
has been playing and singing kids
music professionally for several
years. His music delights children
everywhere. The popular favourites
performed by this singer/guitarist
are enjoyed by the whole family,
while his original tunes, that
emphasize a kids' point of view are
fast becoming new favourites,
especially when sung by his young
daughter Emily.
Having sung with her dad since
the age of five she has been offi
cially named Jongerbongerette.
"I owe a good percentage of my
success to Emily," Mr. Jongeren
said in a newspaper interview.
"She's a good singer and does a
good job. Children love to listen to
her sing.
Emily's songs illustrate a child's
perspective on things, including
how to make sense out of what
grownups say. It is part of the
Jongerbonger trademark of doing
songs about what matters to kids.
For music and fun families can
catch Jongerbonger's performance,
which is being sponsored by the
Blyth Optimists, at 1:30 p.m. on
Saturday, June 25 at the arena
grounds.
