Brussels Squirts earn split During this past week the Brussels Squirt Boys '82' had to battle not only two tough opponents, but the hot weather as well. On Tuesday, they travelled to Winthrop. The game stood in Brussels' favour until the last inning. Jason Armstrong scored in the first inning off hits by Andrew Garland and Joshua Gropp. After Winthrop tied it in the second, Brussels scored two more in the fourth off hits by Garland, Gropp and Joel Kellington. However, the lead was not to last, as Winthrop stormed back with seven runs in the fifth. Mark Kroll was solid on the mound, striking out seven. "Though they failed to get the win, the boys should take pride in their well-played game," said Coach Jason Gropp. An eye on the ball While teammate Mike Cooper, right, moves in to help out if necessary, the Brussels Mosquitoes goalie Kevin Mutter seems to have things well in hand on this shot from Wallace's number 16. The two teams braved the heat to play at the Brussels school on Wednesday evening. Despite many great saves by Kevin and some good team play Wallace came away the victors. They got on the board in the first inning when Gropp was knocked in by Kellington, then Gropp took the lead in the second, when Patrick Gilkes crossed the plate courtesy of a Jason Armstrong home run. Tyler Bragg came home next on Kroll's double. These runs seemed to frazzle the Seaforth defense who allowed four more runs in the third. A long home run by Nathan Garland brought home Gropp and Kellington while Patrick Gilkes scored on Tyler Bragg’s single. In the fourth they added another run when Gropp stole home, then left it to defense to hold on for a 9-6 win. Gropp pitched a good game, striking out 10 hitters. placed fourth out of 50 female entrants, with a time of 39.11 min utes and a 42 km. cycling course where Mrs. Hunt finished 12th in a time of 1:22.48. Belgrave runs were scored in the first and second inning by Jim McCracken and Kevin Hopf, respectively. Belgrave's Craig Marks handed over pitching duties after the first inning to Justin Campbell. Four days later Belgrave hosted a slug fest between them and Wing ham 'Red'. The visitors sprang ahedd with eight in the first three innings, while shutting down the home team. Belgrave sprang into action with seven in the fourth to narrow the lead to one. Crossing the plate for Belgrave were Jeffrey Beyers- bergen, Myron Hussey, Adam Pot ter, Hopf, Jason Fear, Justin Campbell and McCracken. The Wingham team increased the lead with two runs in the fifth, but David Wray, Tom Mullin and Rick Buchannan tied it up in the bottom to end a terrific comeback. Great pitching contributions came from Hopf and Campbell. Catchers were Hussey and Wray. Ms Hermeston is a past winner of the Paddyfest Road Race and For est City Marathon.
