Regional Cancer Centre and Alan
Gavin, Social Worker, London
Regional Cancer Centre told the
audience about the physical
symptoms of prostate cancer and
the concerns a cancer diagnosis can
raise for the man and his family.
Prostate cancer is the second
most common cancer in men over
age 50. In Canada, about 10,000
new cases of prostate cancer are
diagnosed each year. The risk of
developing prostate cancer
increases with age, and it seldom
occurs in men before the age of 50.
Because early prostate cancer does
not usually produce symptoms,
men age 50 and over are
encouraged to have a digital rectal
examination as part of their annual
physical examination. A man may
live for many years with prostate
cancer without ever having the
cancer discovered. The most
common symptom of prostate
cancer is difficulty urinating.
When a man is diagnosed with
prostate cancer it may threaten his
sense of control, raise issues of his
own mortality, challenge his role
function and sexual functioning. A
cancer diagnosis also makes one
think about the future and how a
cancer diagnosis will affect their
ability to work and their retirement
plans.
Men typically tend to withdraw
and do not communicate their
needs and concerns to their family.
This in turn, makes it difficult for
family members to offer them the
needed support.

HPRCSSB passes motion
to amend hiring practices
In an effort to balance the ratio of
male/female teaching staff, where,
possible, at schools offering French
Immersion programs, the Huron-
Perth County RCSS Board
approved a motion which would
amend future hiring practices.
The motion also stated that qual
ified bilingual teachers would be
hired when the opportunity arose.
The board approved the findings
and recommendations of the French
Immersion Program Survey at the
March 28 meeting.
Several personnel issues were
dealt with including the hiring of
Emma Dinicol as a teacher assis
tant; the approval of a leave-of-
absence for Sister Colleen O'Reilly,
without pay, from September 1994
to August 1997 and the partial
leave-of-absence for Gineue Ouel-
let until August 1997.
Teacher, Denise McCarroll, re
quested her permanent contract be
decreased from full-time to part-
time. The request was approved by
the board. -
The board agreed to proceed with
a new Catholic secondary school in
Clinton, subject to a suitable agree
ment being reached with the HCBE
and funding from the Ministry of
Education.
The new school would offer
Grades 9 and 10 in 1995 and add an
additional grade each year there
after.
