Something For Everyone! Information: Little Village Crafts - 523-9168 Presented by crafters from.... Londesborough - Blyth - Clinton - Goderich - Seaforth Regional Cancer Centre and Alan Gavin, Social Worker, London Regional Cancer Centre told the audience about the physical symptoms of prostate cancer and the concerns a cancer diagnosis can raise for the man and his family. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men over age 50. In Canada, about 10,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year. The risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age, and it seldom occurs in men before the age of 50. Because early prostate cancer does not usually produce symptoms, men age 50 and over are encouraged to have a digital rectal examination as part of their annual physical examination. A man may live for many years with prostate cancer without ever having the cancer discovered. The most common symptom of prostate cancer is difficulty urinating. When a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer it may threaten his sense of control, raise issues of his own mortality, challenge his role function and sexual functioning. A cancer diagnosis also makes one think about the future and how a cancer diagnosis will affect their ability to work and their retirement plans. Men typically tend to withdraw and do not communicate their needs and concerns to their family. This in turn, makes it difficult for family members to offer them the needed support.
