Goderich gets jobsOnt. funds for info centre The Town of Goderich will receive $112,000 in jobsOnlario Community Action support for the construction of a full-service tourist welcome centre, Huron MPP Paul Klopp announced April 22 on behalf of Culture, Tourism and Recreation Minister Anne Swarbrick. The new centre will provide travel information for the Huron County area and will also support increased promotion activities for the surround region. "In addition to creating four construction jobs and one full-time and two part-time operations positions, this centre will be an important marketing tool in implementing Goderich's Strategy for Economic Development, completed in 1992," Mr. Klopp said. "This strategy identified tourism as one of four areas of potential economic growth for the town and more specifically, the construction the centre as a priority." The 12,000 sq. foot centre will feature display and rest areas, a parking area, public washrooms and will be fully accessible to persons with disabilities. Staff will be provided by the Southwestern Ontario Travel Association. "The centre will be an excellent opportunity to profile the region's attractions such as Grand Bend, CAs gets CURB money Paul Klopp, MPP Huron, announced April 11 payments totalling $60,840 to the Ausable- Bayfield Conservation Authority and to the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority for cleanup projects in the rural portions of their watersheds. The payments, announced on half of Environment and Energy Minister Bud Wildman, are made available under the Clean Up Rural Beaches (CURB) program. "Clean beaches are an important part in our rural communities," Mr. Klopp said. "By directly assisting farmers and other local residents, this innovative program is funding those who can best contribute to the cleanup of our beaches." At the ABCA, this funding will be spent to provide capital grant assistance to landowners for a manure storage/barnyard runoff control systems ($4,913) and for 10 septic systems ($11,574). At the MVCA, the funding will be spent to provide capital grant assistance to landowners to build three manure storage/barnyard runoff control systems ($36,000) and to build two milkhouse/parlour washwater treatment system ($8,353). The CURB program provides capital grant assistance to clean up beaches in nineteen Ontario conservation authorities. Heart & Stroke canvass, a success During February, more than 700 canvassers went door-to-door collecting donations from residents throughout Huron County. "Our volunteer force worked extra hard this year," says Greg Williams, (Person-To-Person Chair). "Even though we experienced one of the coldest Februarys ever, residents reached into their hearts and gave to a worthy cause. While all the funds collected during February have not come in, indications are that the drive will reach almost $60,000. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario is a community-based volunteer organization whose mission is to reduce the risk of premature death and disability from heart disease and stroke by raising funds for research and health promotion. Despite the progress made over the past 40 years, heart disease and stroke still remain Canada's number one killer. The Huron Chapter appreciates the efforts of every canvasser as well as the multitude of volunteers who work throughout the year in all areas of the Foundation. Their diligence and hard work are greatly appreciated. We want to make strategic investments in a number of priority areas such as human resources training, culture and marketing that will equip the tourism industry for sustained growth. jobsOntario Community Action is a $300 million, three-year program designed to support local economic development and get Ontario back to work.
