Avid angler
Adam Laskis, a grandson of Don Cook, wears a smile
almost as big as his catch at last year’s first annual Spring
Fish Out at Cook's Fish Out Pond, just west of Belgrave.
The event was planned by the siblings of the late Garry
Cook as a way to bring something worthwhile out of their
loss.
Family turns tragedy
into something positive
One area family has found a spe
cial way of turning tragedy into
something positive.
Last year the children of Don
Cook decided to put his fish pond
near Belgrave to good use. Sad
dened by the loss of their brother
earlier that year, they wanted to do
something for families. "After Gar
ry's death we slowly tried to get on
with our lives," said his sister
Nancy Machan of Brussels. "It
brought home to us how important
family is. We were always the nor
mal family — too busy or always
putting things off until later — then
tragedy hit home." The Fish Out,
set for Sunday, June 5 from 8 until
6, is their idea of a way to give
families a chance to get together,
relax and enjoy each other, she
says.
Mrs. Machan, her oldest brother
and her younger sister supply
refreshments and trophies for the
event. The trophies are awarded to
the senior and junior biggest catch
of the day. "It's always fun to see
MP announces Canada Day plans
"Canada Day is still several
months away, but the groundwork
for the July 1 celebrations are
underway" announced Paul
Steckle, Member of Parliament for
Huron-Bruce.
Each year’s festivities result in an
unprecedented level of participa
tion and outpouring of emotion by
Canadians from coast to coast. "I
look forward to the communities
involvement in ensuring a
continued level of success for our
national day celebrations in 1994",
he said.
In each region of the country,
grant application forms are
distributed by the provincial/
territorial Canada Day committees
to municipalities and organizations
that received funding last year.
Those that did not receive any
funding and would like to fill out
an application form or want further
information, should contact the
Canada Day Committee for
Ontario, 25 St. Clair Avenue East,
Suite 200, Toronto, Ontario M4T

(call collect)".
All applications must be
forwarded to the Canada Day
the happy smiles as they wait for
that big bite," says Mrs. Machan.
Last year's winners were Josh
Machan and Clyde Beedie.
Participants need not have a fish
ing license to fish in the trout
stocked spring fed pond. There is
no admission nor entry fee, the
only cost being 25 cents per inch
for fish caught.
Anglers must bring their own
worms, poles and lawn chairs.
There will be raffles and door
prizes. Barbecued food will be
available, but participants are wel
come to bring a picnic lunch if pre
ferred.
Ten per cent of the proceeds for
the day will go towards the Big
Brother's Association. "We felt Big
Brother's was appropriate for us, as
our father lost a son and our brother
left behind a seven-year old son
and two-year-old daughter. We
understand the emptiness a child
feels when their father is gone."

committees and be postmarked no
later than April 15. It is important
to ensure that the provincial/
territorial committees are notified
of all interested groups so that
application forms may be
distributed, completed and returned
in advance of this date for
consideration.
"I encourage everyone to get
involved and make Canada Day
special in our community", said
Mr. Steckle. "It’s never too early to
begin."
