Foundry,
Madill begin
training prog.
By Cameron J. Wood
A $47,000 investment has been
made to extend education
opportunities to the local
workforce, and skills training to
current high school students.
The Education-Work
Connections Project will see the
establishment of a training program
at Western Foundry in Wingham.
The initiative will establish a link
between the high school and the
foundry, and using funds provided
by the Ministry of Education will
enable current foundry employees
to pursue a high school diploma,
upgrade their academic skills or
participate in specialized skills
training. In addition, current Madill
students will be able to pursue
skills training in the industrial
environmental as part of their high
school education.
MPP Paul Klopp said traditional
school settings may not work for
everyone, and in an effort to
combat dropping out, the
government has looked to this
program as a way of offering
alternatives to the typical
classroom.
Western Foundry's Wayne
Phibbs said the program fits nicely
into their corporate philosophy of
teamwork: "This opens doors to
new opportunities for people to
upgrade their education."
The program will be housed in
the current on-site training facility
at the foundry, although Phibbs
said they are adding a new facility
later this year.
The program will also create one
new leaching position. Principal
Rob Parr said they hope to have
things up and running within a
month.
The project is a community
partnership consisting of the
provincial government, the
foundry, the high school and
Community Futures (which will
monitor and report on the pilot
project in 1995).
