The Citizen, 1994-04-06, Page 9Bly th Atom Reps win first championship in 5 years The Blyth Atom Rep hockey club won its first group playoff since the 1988-89 season. Blyth became group champions last Tuesday night by defeating Zurich 8-5 in Blyth. S ports Blyth won the first game of the series in Blyth by a 7-4 score, then travelled to Zurich for game two where they were on the losing side of the same score. The Blyth team played a tight- checking game in game three to win 3-0. Blyth travelled to Zurich March 28 hoping to become champions. However, the Blyth squad fell behind 5-1 in the first period and eventually lost 7-6 despite a gritty comeback. Heart and Stroke Foundation recruits riders An opportunity to pedal one of the world's biggest bikes comes this spring. The Big Bike Ride for Stroke, a three km ride to raise funds for stroke, takes place in Goderich, Sunday, May 22. The Big Bike is a 50'-long, 30- seat vehicle that a team of 29 can ride (a driver is provided for safety purposes). The Big Bike Ride for Stroke is a pledge-based, community event that is novel, wacky and encourages team spirit. Participants earn great prizes. Organizations benefit from the publicity and camaraderie generated by this fun, highly visible event. To ride the Big Bike, each participant must collect a minimum $50 in pledges. The Foundation aims to raise $300,000 from 200 rides across the province which will go into a newly developed Stroke Fund to specifically support stroke research and health promotion programs. Blyth came out with a bang in the third, scoring four straight goals and hung on to win 8-5. The Blyth Atom Reps were presented with the group playoff trophy and individual crests. This capped off a fine season for the team which had compiled a season record at 25 wins, 10 losses and one tie. Blyth was knocked out of the OMHA playoffs by Stephen Township three games to one. Stephen Township is now playing in the OMHA final series. Members of the winning team are goalie, Dean Wilson; defense, Bryce Toll, Drew Corneil, Shawn Bromley and Tyler Stewart; forwards, Derek Cook, Matt Anderson, Jeremy Van Amersfoort, Joel Arthur, Adam Anderson, Nathan Shannon and David Ansley; trainer, Dave Cook; coaches, Brad Bromley and Barney Stewart. Canadians have a stroke. A third of these victims are between the ages of 35 and 65. In 1991, stroke claimed the lives of more than 14,000 Canadians. Initiated on a national level in 1991, the Canada Day Youth Award is once again a key component of this year's program, announced Huron-Bruce MP Paul Steckle. "The Canada Day Youth Award is designed to recognize and reinforce the outstanding achieve­ ments and contributions of young people to their communities," explained Mr. Steckle, "and, by extension, to the betterment of Canada." Anyone may wish to nominate a young person for this award who exemplifies the qualities of citizen­ ship that strengthen the social fabric and enrich our national life, Mr. Steckle said. Potential recipients must be 18 years of age or younger and have made a contribution in any of a number of areas.
