Legion groups to pay for new doors on Hall Recognition Leonard Stilling the Zone Youth Education Chairperson for District C was in Blyth last week to make presentations to two students. Cappy Onn, left, received third prize at the Zone level for her essay entry while Skye Lantinga earned second for her black and white poster and third for her poem. Legion hosts convention Len Shilling, Zone C-l Youth Education Chairman was present to honour Cappy Onn and Skye Lantinga with certificates and prizes from the Zone C-l Remembrance Day contests at the March meeting of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 420. Donations made by motions of members included Vanastra Recreation Centre, $50; Navy League of Canada, $50; Lion’s Youth Exchange, $1,000; H.M.C.S. Haida, Noval Museum Fund, $50; Zone C-l Child Video Program, $141 and the Blyth Summer Festival, $2,500. Branch 420 Public Speaking Contest winners Shannon Scott and Graeme Worsell will advance to the District C-l Public Speaking Competition in Elmira after placing first in Seaforth on March 5. Congratulations and best wishes Shannon and Graeme. Blyth Memorial Hall was the site of the zone C-l Spring convention on Sunday, March 6. A successful afternoon was held with approximately 100 Legion and Auxiliary members attending from Zone and District levels. The Ladies Auxiliary is planning a community dinner on March 17 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Blyth Memorial Hall. Prices for meals Minister baptizes children Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on March 6 were Stephen and Joan Caldwell. Ushers were Earl and Shirley Fyfe and Brenda and Heather McDonald. Janice Peters looked after the junior congregation with Debbie Root in the nursery. The opening hymn was "Praise to the Lord”, followed by Invocation and Confession. Responsive reading was Decalogue. The sacrament of baptism was held. Children being baptised were Andrew James, son of Michael and Jane Hoba and Kelly Ann, daughter of Scott and Kathryn MacDonald. The choral kids all circled around them in an impressive ceremony by singing, "This Child of Mine", accompanied by Phyllis Boak at the piano. This was followed by the congregation singing the hymn include adults, $8.50; children $4; preschoolers are free. Takeout is available. Money raised from this event will go towards updating the hall kitchen. "Take Thy Cross". Shawn Clark read the scripture, I Cor. 1: 18-25. Chad Haggitt read the scripture John. 2: 13-22. Rev. Jock Tolmay's sermon was titled "When is anger right?" He said, "Is it ever right. If you lose it or are out of control, neither is good in its own right. If you use it positively, it can be good. Minute for Missions was given by Erica Clark, followed by the congregational prayer and the singing of The Lord's Prayer. The closing hymn, "I'm not ashamed of my Lord" was sung, followed by the commissioning, benediction and choral response. "Children are Special" conference is March 28 at the Salvation Army Church, 18 Waterloo St. S., Goderich. Continued on page 16 The Blyth Legion and the Blyth Legion Ladies Auxiliary have agreed to pay for the replacement of the oak doors on the front of Memorial Hall, each contributing 50 percent. The Memorial Hall Community Board was informed of the letter received from the Legion at the Feb. 28 meeting. Blyth People Five tables of lost heir were in play at the hall on Wednesday evening. Winners were: high lady, Janet Lawrie; high man, Jim Walsh; low lady, Anna Snell; low man, Feme McDowell, playing as a man. There were seven tables of euchre Monday, Feb. 28 at Blyth Memorial Hall. Winners were: high lady, Bernice McClinchey; high man, Lillian Letherland; low lady, Marjorie East; low man, Clifford Coultes; ladies' lone hands, Ruby Pattison; men's lone hands, Lloyd Appleby. On Tuesday, March 1, 17 local residents enjoyed a mystery tour to the Hamilton area. No tenders were received for the door replacement so Board Chair Shirley Fyfe will contact some local contractors to obtain a price. Mrs. Fyfe was appointed to another term as chair of the board. The dishes ordered by the Ladies Auxiliary, for the Hall have arrived and service clubs are being asked for their financial assistance. The Legion Ladies would also be interested in installing a dishwash­ er, at the cost of $4,000. A community supper will be held on March 17 to help raise funds. Two windows need to be replaced. One window in the link has popped its seal and the cost of labour for replacement, $320 plus tax, should be covered by insur­ ance. The window is covered by a warranty. A small window by the box office is cracked and the cost of repairs is approximately $260 plus tax. The prices were obtained from Fisher Glass in Goderich.
