Council seeks public input While Brussels councillors agreed at the March 7 meeting that a new fire hall for the village would be a good Infrastructure project, they were some divided on whether or not the village needed input into the spending. Councillor Dave Hastings, who had been asked by council at an earlier meeting, to get plans and estimates for a new hall presented the information to council with the additional idea of building the hall on the village property at the north end of town in the industrial park. Councillor Hastings also felt that it would be a good idea to give consideration to moving the municipal office into the building in the future, as it would eliminate the cost of maintaining, heating and updating two buildings. Councillors Mary Stretton and Greg Wilson were reluctant to proceed with any plans, however, until there was some public consultation. Noting that the village had until next March to spend 35 per cent of the grant, Councillor Bruce Hahn was also reluctant to forge ahead. "It looks like there's no reason we have to jump." Councillor Hastings agreed that some people may not like the idea of moving the clerk's office away from the downtown core, but added that there were people who had thought the arena was too far out of the way when it was built. "You don't hear a thing about that now," he said. "Do you really feel the five of us can't say this is a worthwhile cause for Brussels?" SUNSHINE COUNTRY CONSULTING Agricultural & Small Business Accounting, Income Tax & Computer Solutions Ralph Watson Bus. 887-6011 6 Mill St. West Res. 887-6236 Brussels Clerk/Treasurer Donna White said that while she did not care what council spent the money on, she did want them to take advantage of the grant. "I feel as a clerk it's important to use this grant opportunity," she said, adding that in all the years council has been looking at replacing the old hall, she has been unable to find any grant for a firehall. Also, she said, if the village did decide to move the municipal office they would have the proceeds from the sale of the present lot to offset the expense. Reeve Gord Workman agreed that the present clerk's office was too small, but wasn't sure he liked the suggested location. Though all councillors agreed the Industrial Park was a good place for the firehall as there would be less traffic congestion than in the present spot, they were less comfortable with the idea of moving the clerk's office there. Councillor Hastings stressed the poor working conditions in the crowded office. "You try and work Reducing and recycling will make our landfill sites last longer. To try and further lessen the bur den on the Morris Twp. landfill site, Brussels council decided at its March 7 meeting to try recycling cardboard on a trial basis beginning June 1. After a request from Morris Twp. that Brussels look at the idea of recycling cardboard to see if the waste could be reduced at the site, Clerk-Treasurer Donna White con tacted Don Carter of Carter's Waste Disposal to see what could be done. Mrs. White told councillors that Mr. Carter suggested a pickup of household cardboard the first Wednesday of every month. Three bins would be set up in locations throughout the town to accommo date extra cardboard and commer cial cardboard waste. The estimated cost to the village, Mrs. White told council, would be $2,184 or an average increase of $4.75 per household. Council felt the best locations for the bins would be at the IGA, the Brussels People A full house of 13 tables of euchre was played at the Majestic Women's Institute card party on March 1. "We've got to look down the road, too. Here's a way to cut costs." Reeve Workman said he agreed but believed council should hear what the public had to say.
