Not in agreement with this
approach was Dr. Alison Pylypjuk
from the Interlake Dairy Services in
Manitoba. She suggested there were
other advantages to monthly herd
health checks than dry cow mastitis
treatment protocol, identified as a
current “hot topic” within the dairy
industry.
The absence of disease in a
monthly herd health check is not a
reason for stopping observation for
the possible presence of disease, said
Pyllypjuk.
She noted there is technology
being developed for detection of
mastitis in milking parlour
operations.
Supporting her assessment was
Dr. Andrew MacLeod, from
Linwood Veterinarian Services. He
compared vets to tour guides who
need to become familiar with the
overall farm environment.
“There are a lot of things going on
around the farm that need to be
brought together,” said MacLeod.
