of carbon.
He says there are also large
potential savings in construction time
and cost. Since the engineered wood
products are all prefabricated, the
buildings go up very quickly. Moses
mentioned the Brock Commons
building in British Colombia that was
completed structurally in one to two
weeks per floor. He mentioned others
that went up even faster.
Of course aesthetics is also a key
benefit of wooden structures as well.
To illustrate Moses used examples of
the Wayne Gretzky Sports Complex
in Brantford and the Art Gallery of
Ontario in Toronto.
One question raised from the
audience related to the fire hazard of
wooden buildings. Moses indicated
that all multi-storey or commercial
buildings require sprinkler systems
that should contain fires. He also said
the large wooden members maintain
their structural integrity for a long
time if a fire occurs, sometimes
better than other construction
materials. In some cases, specified
sizes of exposed timber are larger
than may be structurally required in
order to provide a longer time-period
before they lose strength if a fire
occurs.
He listed awareness of advanced
wood construction techniques and
training for the construction industry
as challenges to increasing use of
wood in new construction projects. ◊
