The Citizen, 2019-07-18, Page 10PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 18, 2019. Continued from page 1 up and easy to pick up.” From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-4 p.m., community music will be featured at Blyth Lions Park organized by local violinist Capucine Onn. Those looking to join the showcase should contact Onn on Facebook, Sparling said. Those looking for lunch or an early supper can visit Blyth Lions Park on Gypsy Lane where several food trucks will be parked from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sparling explained that the trucks will all be featuring specials involving rutabagas or rutabaga-inspired food. Also at Lions Park, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the kids ‘Baga’ games will be held. The details of the event are being finalized by chair Jeanie Pizzati. One of the fan favourites of past Rutabaga Festivals, the Bed Races and Soap Box races, will start at 1 p.m. at Lions Park and be held on Gypsy Lane. The event is being chaired by Dawn and Gerald Benninger of Doc’s Repair. At 1 p.m., the Huron County Health Unit will be holding a special presentation about how to handle and prepare rutabaga. A venue is yet to be announced for the presentation. At 2 p.m., local firefighter Dalton Richmond will be hosting a home run derby at the baseball diamonds at the Blyth Campground. The last event of the day will be an awards ceremony presenting prizes for participation in special events like best decorated store front, best decorated bed or soap box, the winner of the ping pong tournament and best rutabaga-inspired food. Aside from special presentations and the naming of the Rutabaga Queen, the Blyth Community Betterment’s “100 Bucks for a Truck” draw for a 2019 F150 Ford from Montgomery Ford in Lucknow and Kincardine will be held. The truck is valued at $48,000 and, while the draw is 80 per cent sold out, tickets are still available at businesses like Orr Insurance, Watson’s Home Hardware, the Queens Bakery and the Blyth Ultramar. Sparling also recently announced that another raffle will be held at the Rutabaga Festival for appliances donated by Eurohome Kitchens and Appliances in Wingham. After the awards, a community supper is scheduled at Blyth Memorial Hall, however the details of that event are to be confirmed. Several events are scheduled to be held almost all day on Saturday as well, including the “Battling Sumo Rutabaga” suit event at Lions Park, rutabaga t-shirt dying at Blyth’s Fashion Arts and Creative Textiles (FACTS) gallery and an age-of- majority beverage garden at Lions Park offering rutabaga wine. While there had been discussion about a parade, the Blyth Community Betterment Group decided that for this year’s festival, they would pass on it, Sparling said. “We didn’t want to double up with the Blyth Business Improvement Area’s Christmas parade happening in the month following the festival,” she said. Sparling said that future Rutabaga Festivals may be held at a different time in the year, allowing the parade to be added to the schedule. Those looking to show up dressed for success for the Festival can deck themselves out in Rutabaga Festival merchandise available at local businesses like the Queens Bakery and The Maple and Moose as well as the Blyth Outdoor Market on Thursdays. Doug Cerson, an executive director and past chair of G2G Inc., says he’s closely monitoring the provincial government and the future of the trail. In an e-mail to supporters of the Goderich-to-Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail, Cerson said that while the provincial government is currently assessing some provincially-owned lands, he has been assured that the G2G trail has been removed from that list. “...The lands which make up the corridor between Guelph and Goderich are owned by the Province of Ontario. Recent news articles indicated a potential sale of these lands was in process. Although the lands were in the process of being evaluated by the province, there was no indication from the Ministry that a sale was intended. However, this did raise concerns as to the commitments expressed by various Ministries to G2G Rail Trail Inc. and other various leaseholders in the past,” Cerson said in the e- mail. “I would like to reassure all of our valued trail users, supporters, volunteers, steward groups and municipal stakeholders that G2G Rail Trail Inc. has been in continuous contact with the provincial government, MPPs and appropriate ministers. The creation and full intention of our charitable organization is to lobby for a long- term sustainable trail management plan, which will benefit all stakeholders who strive to improve what is now a fully-connected G2G Rail Trail experience.” Cerson also said that he had been in contact with Huron-Bruce MPP and Minister of Government and Consumer Services Lisa Thompson and was assured that the G2G Rail Trail would remain a priority. “Further, I have been in direct communication with the Minister of Government and Consumer Services Lisa Thompson and she has reassured us that the Goderich to Guelph lands have been removed from the assessment process,” Cerson said. “In addition to relieving G2G Rail Trail and all other leases from the burden of uncertainty, Minister Thompson is committed to finding a long-term solution, which will replace the current multi-lease situation.” Cerson said that while things seem to be moving in the right direction, he urged stakeholders and supporters to keep up collaboration. He said that so much has been accomplished in the last five years and the group had to remain committed to bringing the G2G experience to outdoor enthusiasts from all over the province.
