Of course, none of us wears the appropriate clothing all the time. We fail to be as humble and gentle as we could be. And that is why Paul also says that we ought to forgive as the Lord forgave us. God didn’t wait until we were nearly perfect before He forgave us. Rather, He forgave us long before we reached perfection. None of us has reached perfection yet, but we are still loved by God and forgiven by Him. In the same way we are called to forgive each other. And over all this, the apostle says, “let us put on love” which, in essence, completes our attire. Love is not just an emotion. It is a deep compassion and care for another that results in action. We are to love one another even as we experience God’s love. So, remember this: the wedding dress does not make a woman a bride, but it is appropriate that a bride wear a wedding dress. In the same way, showing compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience does not make anyone into a holy person. We are made holy through faith in Jesus Christ, but living these attributes is appropriate for one who calls themselves a Christian. So, let’s put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, for this clothing is appropriate to those who claim faith in Jesus Christ.
