Brussels Legion presents a

renovations to the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community
Centre, was held over the weekend at the community’s

There’s nothing like a few days of
full sunshine to improve the overall
mood of a community. So, as life
moved along, the moodiness that can
come with clouds and rain was gone
and levity evident as things
happened.
Thinking of fun things, Kid’s
Corner is set for July 22-26, starting
at 1 p.m. each day, so make a note of
the start time.
Soup & More II continues to be
part of many lives here where a
variety of good food is shared and
new acquaintances are made each
Friday. Several cooks share their
recipes, time and talents offering a
wide variety of food to the 40 or so
folks that share this weekly lunch. A
weekly minimum of seven
volunteers ensure that the tasty free
meal is ready by 11:30 a.m. each
Friday.
Pop in some Friday and see what
is happening in our village; you’re
always welcome to come and eat and
meet new friends.
The Fairy Doors are such fun. So,
as you go for a stroll in Brussels this
season, keep an eye out for the wee
doors and their decorations at
several places around the village.
Locations are available at several
businesses and when you see them,
it gives you another reason to smile,
especially if you let your
imagination run wild.
Camp Menesetung staff played
host on Sunday for community
worship and picnic. Several United
Churches cancelled their services
and together gathered in their
lawnchairs at Vesper Point to enjoy
the lovely weather, worship, the lake
view, good company and, of course,
good food. Lakeshore, Clinton,
Blyth and Brussels United Churches
all showed their support for the work
of the camp and enjoyed this time
together.
We had Jeanette Boynton visiting
this past week and it’s always good
to see your community through the
eyes of another. Her history is that of
a small town girl, before she headed
to London 10 years ago. She enjoyed
her stay here and appreciated the
main street businesses, old friends,
Soup & More, the Market, 5R’s, all
a nice change from her London life.
When things happen, it’s good to
take the time to see how life is
changed around you. Health
changes, yours or others, big or
small may have subtle or abrupt
effects. Death of a family member or
friend changes how life is viewed.
Many changes that occur affect us
and others in many, many ways. So
be gentle to those around you,
changes happen to us all and only
we determine how we live with
them. Sometimes all you can do is
offer a prayer or two.
Take care of yourself.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
By Jo-Ann McDonald
A meeting of the Catch the Ace
committee started the week at the
Brussels Legion Branch to ensure all
was in order for the final Catch the
Ace draw. It has been 40 weeks!
Unbelievable to think the ace would
stay hidden for 40 weeks, but it did!
The Friday night draw had a great
crowd on hand all hoping to take
home the big prize. The winners of
the 40th weekly draw were Jeff and
Cathy Cardiff, winning $780. They
chose envelope number 51 and
found the four of clubs. So the draw
continued. There were seven more
draws, and still the ace was not
found. The names drawn were:
Darlene Biemans, number five – ace
of diamonds; Lyle Hood, number
52 – king of spades; Myke
Hamilton, number 35 – two of
hearts; Rose Chambers, number
eight – two of spades; Cheryl Souch,
number 21 – seven of diamonds;
Doug and Sheila Bauer, number
three – three of clubs and Emily
Cousins, number 41 – the ace of
hearts. The names above for draws
41-47 all receive two fish fry tickets
for the meal on July 1 for a
consolation prize. Finally, the 48th
name drawn, a winner was found.
Tom Cronin with envelope number
30 contained the ace of spades.
Unfortunately Tom was unable to
attend, but the crowd had a good
time celebrating the conclusion of
the event. Many enjoyed beef on a
bun for supper and the social time
celebrating.
Stubby D was on hand for karaoke
and there were lots of happy folks
singing and being happy. The draw
committee celebrated the final night
and now life can go on with other
things.
Saturday had four-and-a-half
tables of players for progressive
euchre. Comrades Glenn Bridge and
Dianne Huether looked after it.
Winners were: high pink card, Joyce
Hodgins, 73; high white card, Betty
Thompson, 71; second, pink card,
Florence Machan, 72; white card,
Anne Laidlaw, 68; low pink and
white cards, Ethel and Lorna Gillis,
46 and lone hands, Olave Little,
three. The euchre is now on summer
hiatus.
The helpers can enjoy their
Saturdays and summer and
hopefully will be ready to run them
again in the fall. See you in
September.
The Sunday night dance had the
Classic band playing for the
entertainment. They played a lot of
the older tunes that everyone knows.
They are a local band for the
Atwood area. Just a small crowd of
near 50 enjoyed the night.
Don’t forget the Brussels
Cemetery decoration service this
Sunday at 2 p.m. This service is
planned by the Legion for the
churches and people of Brussels and
area. Low attendance the past few
years is not encouraging to carry on
the tradition. Please plan to attend
the service in memory of loved ones
who rest in Brussels Cemetery.
