At the Branch ‘Ace’ jackpot to hit $30,000 By Jo-Ann McDonald The Brussels Legion Branch is quieter now with the Cadet Corps on summer break as are the Thursday night darts. The pipe band still has practice on Thursday evenings and is still looking for new members. Instruction on pipes and drums is free. Drop by any Thursday night to find out more and to learn what it is all about. Wednesday night was a District Legion meeting at the Branch. It was a sub council meeting for the members of District C Command. There were about 25 chairmen in attendance from across the District C. Attending from Brussels were Comrades Eric Ross as District Commander, Comrade John Lowe as District Youth Chairman and Comrade Jamie Mitchell as President of the Branch. They conducted their meeting and then had light refreshments to end their evening. Friday night had the Catch the Ace draw and again the ace remains hidden. The lucky weekly winner was Vern Logan of $850. He chose envelope number seven and found the five of spades. Estimated jackpot is $30,000. The crowd attending enjoyed the music of the Jelly Bean Blues duo during the evening. They played from 6-10 p.m. and it was great. Wings and fries were served during the evening with a great crowd enjoying the food. This is the last week of the licence for the Catch the Ace draw, so a winner must be found. There will be beef on a bun available for food and following the draw, karaoke with Stubby D is on hand to help celebrate the conclusion of the draw. Comrade Sandra Brown has been on holidays this past week and we hope she enjoyed her holidays. We had BJ Hummel and Deb Ross filling in for the week and they did a great job. Sunday, June 30 2:00 pm Good weather adds to annual firefighters’ breakfast Happiness is one of those illusive things. It’s not something we consider daily very often and so it’s not really missed until it’s gone. From a recent survey Canadians are among the happiest folks in the world. We trail the Scandinavian countries on this scale, but when you consider size, history and government, we are a pretty happy bunch. Unemployment and health are two factors that most affect us and money has a limiting effect. Relationships/friendships and generosity are great ways to increase your happiness. These are all things we know but a good reminder that attitude and acceptance of life as it comes will tip the happiness scales. Good weather gets people out and about so the weather of Sunday had the firefighters busy cooking for the community. From the 7 a.m. start, folks were ready to be filled with line-ups at several times to the last pancake. The team work of the Brussels brigade was obvious as each member had their job making everyone welcome and fed. So thanks again for protecting our community and thanks for sharing your cooking skills with us. Next week, the Ethel firefighters would like to feed you at their hall. The Agricultural Society played host to a farm tour on Sunday afternoon. With maps obtained at the Four Winds Barn, a pleasant drive offered a variety of farming products and styles all in our midst. Like everything else in life, methods of farming have changed and this was a great opportunity to learn. It was a day to celebrate the role of agriculture and its many off shots. When you consider the effect of agribusiness has on it, it’s a marvel. Alice Martin has been a little busy lately. With Gary and family back for a holiday from teaching duties in Alaska and Wendy much closer to home now, things have been happening for their family. Family time is precious and distance makes it more so. The years slip away and only the growth and changes in the grandchildren remind us how fast time flies. More good memories made and I’m sure grandma’s having a well deserved rest now. Take care of yourself but remember the North Huron Food Share folks are in need of care as well, a cheque is always appreciated or food in the bins works well too. Bye now, Betty G.W.
