Now we can add to that the new report on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The only local direct action I am aware of in this community is that of the Blyth Festival theatre, which begins each of its shows with an expression of gratitude to the Indigenous owners of this territory for their stewardship of this place and their acceptance of a treaty with the representatives of our European ancestors. The development of a similar opening statement was considered by the previous North Huron Council, but I have heard of no uptake on that by this council. But the challenge of both matters should not be accepted only by council and the theatre. These matters require the heartfelt and earnest concern of every citizen of Blyth and North Huron as well as our county, our province, and our country. Many people excuse themselves from this cause for reasons such as: • I don’t know any Indigenous people • It happened a long time ago and far away • I am not responsible for how Indigenous people were and are mistreated • There are no First Nation reserves or residential schools in this community • I have no idea of what I can do to help the situation. There are also other excuses that are too offensive to quote. I am not in any way an expert in the field of Indigenous affairs, but I did work in the field of Indigenous education for several years. I have seen both thriving and troubled First Nation communities. I have witnessed federal government bureaucrats make mean and stupid decisions. I found communities with many children of six to nine years of age who had never attended school due to overcrowding, not to mention many other prejudicial actions. What can we in this area do about this situation? We need to learn more about the issues. We need to demand of our political leaders at all levels that they do what is right and necessary to address these issues. We need to ensure that our children are being taught the truth about the Indigenous people and their relations with the European set. We need people and organizations in our own communities to take up the responsibility for sustaining awareness of the need for justice, truth and reconciliation for all of us. By working together on huge issues like this, our voices can be heard and our efforts can be magnified. Brock Vodden. Continued from page 6 while other people in the community made their own. The first wave of doors has already been installed throughout the community, Onn said, and she plans more, hoping to eventually have 50 to 70 stops on the tour. She said she plans to implement gamification into the trail eventually, setting up some kind of reward for visiting the different doors across the community. Currently, lists are available at Turning Heads and Making Waves, the 5Rs Community Thrift Store and JD and Compan on the community’s main street. For more information, contact Onn at 519-887-6336.
