Madill athletes to compete at provincial championships
Sports
The long march to the Ontario
Federation of School Athletic
Associations (OFSAA) track and
field competition continued with
F.E. Madill School athletes
competing at the OFSAA West
Regionals at Jacob Hespeler
Secondary School in Cambridge last
week.
The top four finishers in each
event qualify for the provincial high
school championships. OFSAA
West is touted as one of the most
competitive regional meets in the
province. Madill athletes set
two new school records, one
new benchmark, and several
athletes claimed entrance to
OFSAA.
Abigail Kraayenbrink continued
to break school records, earning a
berth to OFSAA in both the 1,500-
metre (4:49.46) and the 3,000-metre
races (10:29.30).
Teammate Steven Schraa ran
strong 1,500-metre and 3,000-metre
races coming fifth in both races. He
also set a new school benchmark in
the 3,000-metre (9:27.0).
Brooke Jez continued to grow
stronger with each meet. She ran a
seasonal best in the 800-metre race
(2:27.50) to place in the top 10.
Ryan Jacklin led the field in
Senior Boys discus by four metres
hurling the implement 54.16 metres
to win the event. In shot put he
heaved the 12-pound shot 17.02
metres to win his second event and
qualify for OFSAA in the two
events.
Teammate Hanna VanStuyvenberg
competed well in the discus event
throwing 39.41 metres, earning a
third-place finish and a berth to
OFSAA.
Teammate Carly Frank ended a
successful season in throwing. Frank
has been a hardworking,
contributing team member who
graduates this year.
In Senior Boys, Austin Eadie had
outstanding performances in
jumping events. Despite a personal
best jump of 12.82 metres in triple
jump he missed fourth place by one
centimetre. In long jump, he again
narrowly missed fourth place by two
centimetres, despite jumping 6.57
metres.
Teammate Matt Darrell qualified
to regionals in all three of his track
events (200-metre, 400-metre and
400-metre hurdles), a rare and
difficult feat. He ran strong races,
posting a time of 23.14 in the 200-
metre race, 52.01 in the 400-metre
and 58.02 in the 400-metre hurdles
but was not able to qualify in the top
four.
Both Eadie and Darrell,
graduating this spring, have been
strong contributing members of
Madill track during their entire high
school life. This marks the final high
school meet for both Eadie and
Darrell.
Abigail Kraayenbrink, Steven
Schraa, Ryan Jacklin, and Hanna
VanStuyvenberg competed at
OFSAA held at the University of
Guelph June 6-8.
Earlier last week, that same Madill
track and field team competed at the
Western Ontario Secondary School
Athletics Association (WOSSAA)
championships.
Twelve athletes qualified in 23
events (requiring a top-five finish) to
proceed to the OFSAA West
Regionals.
Madill athletes earned 15 personal
bests and 27 top-six finishes.
Kraayenbrink posted new school
records in the Junior Girls 800-metre
race (2:27.80) and 1,500-metre race
(4:47.13).
She also won the 3,000-metre race
(10:37.56) event by a substantial
margin.
Schraa also reset school
benchmarks in both the 1,500-metre
race (4:21.81) and the 3,000-metre
race (9:35.20).
Mackenzie Finch (Junior Girls)
and Jez (Senior Girls) ran gutsy 800-
metre races to also qualify for the
next level.
Darrell burned up the track. In the
200-metre race event he tied a 10-
year-old record belonging to Trevor
Stacey sprinting the distance in
22.95 seconds. Darrell also earned
top five finishes in both the 400-
metre hurdles and 400-metre race.
The jumpers were hard at work in
the sand pits earning their way to the
next level. Jaime Newell, Jared
Fitch, Matt Oldridge and Eadie all
had top finishes in triple jump with
Eadie also qualifying in long jump.
In the throwing circles, Jacklin
earned first place finishes in both
senior boys shot put (16.50 metres)
and discus (46.24 metres).
VanStuyvenberg also won gold in
the Senior Girls discus (39.13
metres).

of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) West event,
