Blyth Laundromat 191 Westmoreland St., Blyth 519-523-9687 Blyth Memory Garden dedication event set NEWS FROM BLYTH By Marilyn Craig Call 523-9318 From Marilyn’s Desk Cable reflects on the Pentecost Greeting and ushering worshippers at Blyth United Church on Sunday, June 9 were Emily Phillips and Arletta Hallahan. Marilyn Scott was organist and Katie Dockstader, choir director as well as running the Power Point. Sandra Cable was guest speaker and she welcomed everyone to church on such a sunny morning. She drew everyone’s attention to the announcements printed in the bulletin. Emily Phillips reminded everyone that there would be no service at Blyth United Church on Sunday, June 23 as everyone is invited to Camp Menesetung for Church at 11 a.m. Sandra lit the Christ candle and the others on the altar table. She invited everyone to greet one another. The first hymn, “Spirit of the Living God”, was sung. The call to worship was read responsively and the opening prayer was said in unison. For the children’s story, Sandra told the congregation that it was Pentecost Day, meaning that today was the birthday of the churches of the world. The United Church of Canada is 94 years old. The United Church of Canada was created in 1925. Sandra had a windmill in her hand and she explained that the Spirit is like the wind, you can’t see the wind put we can see what it does. When she blew on the windmill it moved. It is the same with the Spirit, we can’t see it but we can see all the good the Spirit does. The children’s hymn “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness”, was sung. The scripture readings were from Acts 2: 1-21 the story of the Disciples going out and preaching to the people and Psalm 104 :24-35. The choir sang the anthem, “Hear Us, O Father.” Sandra’s message to the congregation was “The Spirit is…” Pentecost is a day to celebrate, it is the birthday of the world’s churches. It is also a time to celebrate the Disciples transforming and going out to preach to the crowds. They finally have stepped into Jesus’ steps and carried on His teachings. One way to look at the Spirit is the symbol of a dove, which is part of the United Church crest. It soars over the earth. The second symbol is fire, which is another part of the United Church crest. Moses saw the burning bush. Another way to express the Spirit is in song. We sang one this morning, “Spirit of Gentleness.” The Spirit worked in the early churches and continues to work in today’s churches. The Spirit pushes us to do things that are out of our comfort zone. With Spirit, all things are possible. The prayers for the people and silent prayers were followed by the receiving of the offering, the offertory response “Grant Us, God, the Grace” and the offertory prayer. Communion was served by Gwen Papple, Emily Phillips and Agnes Wharton. The next hymns were, “We Gather at Your Table” and “We Are One” followed by the commissioning and the benediction and the singing of the choral “Amen.” Everyone was invited for coffee and fellowship.Brussels Legion Branch 218 Catch the Ace Entertainment Jelly Bean Blues Duo Wings and Fries available Draw at 7:15 pm Friday, June 14th 6-10 pm The Friends of the Village of Blyth welcome you and your family to The Blyth Memory Garden Please accept this invitation to the 17th Annual Remembrance and Dedication Service at the Memory Garden Drummond Street East, Blyth Sunday, June 16, 2019 2:00 pm Join us for fellowship and refreshments Enjoy the Garden in the Springtime.
