Blyth Bullets take silver at provincial tournament
The Blyth Midget Girls Bullets
broomball team captured a
provincial silver medal over the
weekend after a hard-fought, long
tournament in Barrie.
The squad initially posted a 1-0
win over tournament champions
Kilsyth in overtime, but, due to a
double knockout rule, had to face off
against them a second time, losing
the championship game 1-0, again in
overtime.
“We beat Kilsyth once, but
because it’s a true double knockout,
we had to beat them twice to get the
gold,” team coach Ken Logtenberg
said. “We couldn’t do it. I guess we
just ran out of gas.”
Logtenberg said that was the
theme for the tournament as Blyth
had to go to overtime four times to
find a winner.
To get to the championships, the
squad posted 1-0 wins over Mildmay
and their sister Blyth squad, the
Blyth Ice. The team was downed by
the Stealth team, based in Ottawa, 2-
0.
Logtenberg said the squad has had
a successful season, earning medals
in tournaments in Blyth and
Windsor, and competing in a
tournament in Mildmay last month.
He attributed his players’ victories to
good, fundamental play.
“Part of the reason we’re
successful is strong defence,” he
said. “We don’t give up many goals.
We also have a strong passing game
and play well as a team.”

Holy Rollers making pies again
Greeting and ushering
worshippers at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Feb. 10 were Hope
Button and Marilyn Craig. Marilyn
Scott was organist and Katie
Dockstader, choir director. John
Stewart ran the Power Point.
Sandra Cable welcomed everyone
to church and reminded everyone of
the announcements printed in the
bulletin. Special mention that the
Holy Rollers are making pies again
this winter. February orders are full.
Volunteers are making turkey pies
on March 6 and beef pies on March
20. Get your orders in to Donna
Moore at 519-523-9855.
Sandra lit the Christ candle and
the other candles on the altar table.
She invited everyone to greet one
another. The first hymn was
“Worship the Lord.” The call to
worship was said responsively
followed by the opening prayer
repeated in unison. The children’s
story was about Jesus telling Simon
Peter and the others to go back to
their boats and put the nets over the
other side of the boat and they will
catch fish. Jesus tells the fishermen
that they will be fishers of men.
The children’s hymn “Jesus You
Have Come to the Lakeshore”, was
sung. The scripture lesson was Luke
5:1-11. The response, “Holy, Holy,
Holy” was sung. The choir sang the
anthem, “Jesus is Lord of All”.
Sandra’s message to the
congregation was, “Will you accept
the invitations to go into deep, deep
waters?” When we go on a cruise we
are looking to see creatures that
often live deep in the water. It is
fascinating to think of all the things
that live in the deep waters. In the
scriptures, the people got so close to
Jesus that He asked the fishermen to
bring their boats to Him. He asks
them to go just a little off the shore
so He can talk to all the people.
Jesus tells Simon Peter to take his
boat out into the waters and put their
nets down on the other side and they
will fill with fish. Simon Peter
trusted Jesus and he took his boat
out and fished from the side that
Jesus had told him. His nets filled
with fish and he had to call other
boats to come and help.
The United Church is changing in
structure. The church has to be
willing to change in this day and
age. Life in the church is like letting
our nets down and see where we go
from here. Mistakes will be made
but we have the faith that it will turn
out alright.
The next hymn, “Will You Come
and Follow Me”, was sung. The
offering was received followed by
the offertory response, “What Can I
Do?” and the offertory prayer.
“Lord, Listen to Your Children
Praying” was sung leading into the
prayers for the people, silent prayers
and the singing to the Lord’s Prayer.
The last hymn, “I’m Gonna Live so
God Can Use Me” was sung
followed by the commissioning and
the benediction and the singing of
the response, “Thank You Lord, on
This Day”. Everyone was invited
for coffee and fellowship.

Palmer calls for slower plows
North Huron Councillor Chris
Palmer wants plow drivers to slow
down in East Wawanosh.
“Our trucks [and] our snow plows
are going too fast,” he said at North
Huron Council’s Feb. 4 meeting.
“They’re doing a great job
everywhere. They’re doing a good
job cleaning the snow, but in some
places, they go too fast.
Palmer requested that senior staff
suggest the operators slow down.

During North Huron Council’s
Feb. 4 meeting, Councillor Chris
Palmer explained that a trucking
company, located at the top of a hill
in East Wawanosh, needed some
support from council and staff to
alleviate a potential driving hazard.
He said the company is located at
the top of a hill, and the entry and
exit at the property can be blind
corners due to the topography of the
road. Palmer suggested signs
advertising the fact that trucks are
present at the location.
Staff were directed to investigate
the situation.

North Huron Reeve Bernie Bailey
is going forward with plans to have
staff review agreements with
neighbouring municipalities.
Bailey gave notice that, during
council’s Feb. 19 meeting, he would
be bringing forward a motion to
have staff review contracts with
neighbours. In previous meetings, he
has explained the move will help
North Huron when it comes time to
negotiate agreements with
neighbours.
The issue most recently came up
during budget discussions when
council was debating Central
Huron’s decision to pull financial
support from initiatives like the
Blyth and District Community
Centre, despite the fact that Central
Huron ratepayers use the site.
