Condolences, best wishes offered to locals, families
Christmas is a wonderful time of
the year for many. Family come
home from afar and visits with
extended family make for an
enjoyable time for all. Good weather
is always hoped for because of travel
and we can say it was good for travel
this year, except maybe for
Christmas Eve day at times. It
looked like a green Christmas until
the squalls blew in on Dec. 24 and
made driving rather difficult at
times. Christmas Day and Boxing
Day were fine and we hope all
enjoyed their days.
Unfortunately, Christmas can also
be a time of sadness for many
families because of the loss of loved
ones.
Our condolences are extended to
Edythe Warwick and family on the
passing of her sister Doris
(McLennan) Thompson. Doris and
her late husband Ned, lived in
Mitchell and she will be missed by
her children Paul, Louanne and
Beth. Our sympathies to the
families.
Our condolences are extended to
the Scherbarth family on the passing
of Barb Scherbarth. She will be
missed by her children Lynda, Mike,
Lori and Marci and their families.
Barb and her late husband Charlie
were travelling companions of our
Walton group and went south with
the group several times back in the
1990s. Our sympathies to all.
Our condolences to Glenn Orth on
the passing of his mother, Mabel
Orth. She had been a resident of
Huronlea for several years. Our
sympathies to the Orth families.
Many will remember the Siddalls
when they lived in Brussels. Our
condolences to Shirley and children
Kevin, Cory and Jay on the passing
of Murray Siddall. He operated an
insurance business in town for many
years and was a very nice man. Our
sympathies to all.
Our condolences are extended to
the Keiffer family on the passing of
Bill Keiffer. He will be missed by his
wife Linda and children Sean,
Tammy and Jason and their families.
Bill will be remembered by many of
Morris Turnberry for his many years
of service for the township. Our
sympathies to all.
We hope that Jim Ryan is feeling
better after spending time in hospital
before Christmas. He is home and
out and about again.
We send out fast healing wishes to
Jane Zwep who is suffering from a
fall. She has cracked a vertebrae in
her back by falling on ice before
Christmas and is just getting out and
about again, but slowly. Feel better
soon Jane!
It was great to see Clyde McClure
out and about from his hip
replacement in early December. He
is coming along very well and will
soon be out and about on his own
again.

Celebrating Christmas as a group
was the Walton Women’s Institute.
They gathered at the Walton Inn and
had a delicious turkey dinner in the
blue room. There were six ladies
present including Marjory
Humphries (who was celebrating her
actual 90th birthday), Brenda Perrie,
Marion Godkin, Ruth Axtmann,
Margaret McInroy and Helen Craig.
They enjoyed the meal, the visit and
then the meeting that followed.
Celebrating a lovely Christmas
together was the McCall family.
Murray and Sherry McCall had their
three daughters. Carali, Marci and
Shawna and their families all home
together from England, Switzerland
and Goderich. They enjoyed their
time, had family pictures taken and
visited with many of the extended
family.
Neil and Marie McGavin’s family
gathered at Jeff and Shannon
McGavin’s for their Christmas. They
had around 25 attend with all of
Bryan and Heather’s family home
from North Bay, Cathy and Pat’s,
Brian and Shelley’s and Jeff and
Shannon’s, with a few missing. A
very fun and interesting gathering
for Neil and Marie McGavin is
grandchildren night. Many of the
grandchildren come for supper with
them and it is “interview” Grandpa
night.
They have a great time talking
about the “good old days”, things to
remember, important facts and
stories of the family, what’s going on
in the young people’s lives, some
hopes and some dreams, school
updates and all their lives and
happenings. Sounds like a wonderful
evening for the next generation to
enjoy with their very important
“older” generation.
Travelling to spend Christmas in
Alberta were Lorne and Bonnie
Glanville. They went for a week over
the holiday to spend with son Paul,
his wife Theresa and their girls
Meaghan and Erica. They live at
Sylvan Lake outside of Red Deer.
They had a great time celebrating the
Christmas season with them.
Looking ahead to spring seems a
ways away, but time will fly. The
“Breath of Spring” event hosted by
the Seaforth Agricultural Society is
in April, but tickets are available
now at retail outlets in Seaforth.
Look for the signs in the windows.
They have an exciting lineup of
guest speakers arranged and the
event is usually sold out early.
Congratulations to Thomas Baker
and Nicole who were married on
New Year’s Eve. The reception was
held at the Four Winds Barn and was
enjoyed by all. Thomas is the son of
Allan and Shirley Baker.
Congratulations to all.
We welcome home Liz Sholdice
from her Christmas holiday on the
east coast with daughter Cathy and
Randy Fischer and family. She was
away about three weeks and enjoyed
her time with the family.
The Cranbrook dart league has
started its winter play on a very
snowy wintery night on Jan. 2. There
were 18 players, old and new,
venturing out to enjoy the evening of
play. The duo of Logan Peterson and
Rob VanderVeen are team six and
they won five games on the evening.
Logan had high shot of 122 and
Kathy Workman hit 140. The group
will play until around Easter at the
Cranbrook Hall.
A great evening out was enjoyed
by ourselves and friends Steve and
Marni Knight. We went to an Owen
Sound Attack hockey game and we
enjoyed dinner out and a fantastic
game. A slow start by the Attack
against the North Bay Battalion saw
them down 3-0.
The Attack, with the two young
man back with the team from Team
Canada and play in British
Columbia, played hard and tied the
game during the third period. They
then played a four-on-four overtime
period, complete with a penalty shot,
followed by three-on-three play
and finally a shootout for the Attack
win.
It was back to school Monday
morning for the children, teachers
and bus drivers. Admittedly, it was
tough getting up after such a great
break from the early rise and shine. I
admit sleeping in on non-school
mornings, but will be back into
routine quickly!
The new year brings the New
Year’s babies. Many locals celebrate
their birthdays on Jan. 1 including
Frank Schimanski, Dave Linton,
Brent Melady, Courtney Bachert,
Claire Mitchell, Alexandria
Shahshahani and Brayden
Shortreed. Everybody is special
when celebrating their birthday and
that includes Michael Craig, Don
Nolan, Taylor Williamson, Jason
Baan, Stephen Henderson, Ben
Hoegy, Jodi McIntosh, Marie Blake,
Caleb Ringgenberg, Logan Terpstra,
Evelyn Blake, Stewart Steiss,
Marjory Fraser, Luke Fritz, Susan
McLachlan, Rob Mitchell, Lucas
Jacklin, Mark Coleman, David
Huether, Ryan Marks, Jaxon
Bromley, Jarrett Humphries, Brian
Marks, Rick Pethick, Canon
Beuermann, BJ DeJong, Sherri
Hackwell, Hugh Nichol and Danica
Zwep Janmaat. Happy birthday to
all.
