The community congratulates
Ryan Jacklin on winning two gold
medals and one bronze medal at the
2018 Royal Canadian Legion’s
National Youth Track and Field
Championships in Brandon,
Manitoba with over 650 athletes
competing.
The annual Campbell picnic was
held on Sunday, Aug. 19 at the
Belgrave ballpark pavilion. It was
hosted by the family of Don and
Susan Campbell with over 50 people
in attendance.
Glenn Schmidt thanked everyone
for coming and Nancy Jardin said
the grace. A scrumptious buffet
dinner was enjoyed by everyone.
Contests were enjoyed. The
youngest person was Jackson
Campbell, son of Jeremy and Stacy
Campbell; oldest, but youngest at
heart, Don Campbell; closest to ball
park, John and Linda Campbell;
farthest away, Jeremy, Stacy and
Jackson Campbell.
Winners of the guessing the candy
in the jar were: John Campbell, son
of Chris and Laurie Campbell; Patti
Galbraith, Jeremy Campbell and
Linda Campbell. The children and
the young-at-heart enjoyed several
games and prizes were awarded. The
playground was a hit with the
children. The afternoon was spent
visiting.
A great afternoon was brought to a
close with hugs and goodbyes and
wishes for a safe trip home. Save the
date – the Campbell Christmas will
be held on Sunday, Nov. 26 at the
Community Centre.
On Saturday, Aug. 18 we were
invited to the family farm of Stacy
Campbell’s parents, Hilke and Doug
Dam near Harriston. It was at the
Cozy Nook where two years ago the
outdoor wedding of Jeremy and
Stacy took place. This time over 60
people celebrated Jeremy and
Stacy’s anniversary, meeting baby
Jackson and surprising Stacy’s sister
(Laurie) on her 40th birthday. A
barbecue supper and buffet were
enjoyed. An outdoor movie, popcorn
and campfire were also planned for
the evening.
The community congratulates and
sends special birthday wishes to
Dwight Lamont and Donelda
Cottrill, two of the triplets
celebrating their 60th birthday, Aug.
19.
On Sunday, Aug. 19 the Knox
United Church service was held at
Procter’s Pond.
The service at Belgrave United
Church returns on Aug. 26 at 10 a.m.
Everyone is welcome.
Recent visitors with Ross and
Wilma Higgins of Cardiff Road
were Brian Farrier, Toronto and
Colleen and Parish Athparia,
Calgary and daughter Lenamarie,
Toronto. They also attended the
Farrier picnic at Gillespies near
Ball’s Bridge, Edna Pletch’s at
Brussels and Mildred McDonald’s,

Jackie DeWit, right, donated $300 to the Brussels division of the Huron East Fire Department.
She also made donations to the Brussels Lions Club and Tanner Steffler Foundation. The
funds came from the opening of The DeWit luxury suites above her store, JD and Company,
that she opened last year on Brussels’ main street after being named the champion of the
Brussels Win This Space competition hosted by the Municipality of Huron East.(Photo submitted)
It has now been more than one
year since the Belgrave Women’s
Institute disbanded. The minute
books and curator books have been
placed in the Huron County Museum
for further research. The Huron West
District curator books are also there.
The Belgrave Women’s Institute
recently received the following letter
from the Federated Women’s
Institutes of Ontario:
“Dear Members: It is a sad day
when a Branch leaves this great
organization. The mark of Women’s
Institute members can be seen
throughout the world, an
accomplishment that WIs should be
very proud of. Most have devoted
almost their entire lives to helping
families and communities. Wherever
there was a need, WI members
stepped up to the plate to fulfill that
need and more.
Erland and Janet Lee, and
Adelaide Hoodless would be so very
proud of what you have
accomplished.
In 1897, to have taken a small
group of women in Ontario and
expand that to a group of thousands
and thousands of women across the
world is a proud heritage. To
become so large that hundreds of
groups needed to incorporate to co-
ordinate the work of Branches is a
remarkable accomplishment.
Times are changing as they have
in the past 100 plus years and
Women’s Institutes will continue to
show that they too can adapt to an
ever-changing world. The job is a
more difficult one, but Women’s
Institutes are still here fighting to
retain their status as one of the top
women’s groups in the world.
The Provincial Board thanks you
for your years of contribution. Your
community has been blessed to have
such a great group of ladies attend to
their needs. Congratulations on all
of your accomplishments.
For Home & Country,
Linda Zelem
FWIO President.”
