With another great turnout, eight young women will be vying for the Huron County Princess crown on Thursday after last year’s winner Brooklyn Hendriks went on to great success. Hendriks was crowned Huron County Princess at last year’s Huron County Plowing Match and would go on to be crowned the first-ever International Plowing Match (IPM) Princess last fall in Walton. This Thursday, Hendriks will pass her Huron County tiara and sash on to a new winner and then next month she’ll pass off her IPM crown. The competition will be part of the plowing match’s annual Junior Day on Thursday, Aug. 23, with speeches commencing at 1:30 p.m. The contestants will speak for the judges and be part of a cake- decorating competition en route to the judges choosing a winner. Eight young women will be vying for the Princess crown that day: Amanda Bos of RR3, Auburn; Kalli McCowan of Tuckersmith; Emily Hickey of Auburn; Jaden Shortreed of RR3, Walton; Rachel Gras of RR1, Dublin; Addie Treble of Benmiller; Mackenzie Terpstra of the Brussels area and Caitlin McKercher of the Dublin area. Kalli McCowan is the 14-year-old daughter of David and Darlene McCowan of Tuckersmith in Huron East between Seaforth and Clinton. A recent Grade 8 graduate from Huron Centennial Public School, Kalli received the Huron East Female Citizenship Award and will be attending Central Huron Secondary School in the fall. Kalli recently began working part- time on the family farm collecting eggs. Her interests include horseback riding, travelling, the arts and music. She enjoys spending time with horses and her cats and in her spare time, Kalli volunteers with local non-profit organizations. Amanda Bos is the 15-year-old daughter of John and Tina Bos of RR3, Auburn. Over the years, Amanda has been involved with the local 4-H Sheep Club. Amanda will begin Grade 10 at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School in the fall and her interests include reading and camping. Emily Hickey is the 15-year-old daughter of Evan and Katie Hickey of the Auburn area, where her family owns a cash crop farm with veal and sheep. The St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School student will be returning to school in Clinton in the fall for Grade 10. Emily’s hobbies and interests include music, farming, riding western horseback and reading. Jaden Shortreed is the 15-year-old daughter of Jim and Valerie Shortreed of RR3, Walton. The St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School student will be entering Grade 11 in the fall. Jaden currently works as a waitress at the Walton Inn and also works on a local goat farm. She enjoys spending time with her friends, dirt biking and playing soccer and volleyball. Rachel Gras is the 13-year-old daughter of Andre and Liz Gras of RR1, Dublin. She lives on a farm near Seaforth and has her own chickens and a 4-H lamb. She says she is an absolute lover of farm life. In the fall, Rachel will become a student at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School. She enjoys playing soccer, horseback riding and spending time with her friends and family. Addie Treble is the 15-year-old daughter of Barry and Laurie Treble of the Benmiller area. In the fall, Addie will be going into Grade 10 at Goderich District Collegiate Institute. Her interests are broomball, baseball and 4-H clubs. Mackenzie Terpstra is the 16-year- old daughter of Jason and Michelle Terpstra of the Brussels area, the second-oldest of 11 children. Mackenzie lives on a pig farm just outside of Brussels. This fall she will be going into Grade 11 at St. Michael’s Catholic Secondary School in Stratford. Her interests are playing soccer, running and Nordic skiing and she also likes working on the farm and collecting sap with her family. Caitlin McKercher is the 14-year- old daughter of John and Lorna McKercher. She lives on a farm near Dublin and will be going into Grade 9 at Central Huron Secondary School in the fall. Caitlin is an active 4-H Club member and was a member of Perth County’s 4-H provincial Go for the Gold championship team in 2017. She is an avid reader and plays ringette with the Exeter-Seaforth Explosion. The 91st annual Huron County Plowing Match is set to take place Aug. 23-24 at the Clinton-area farm of Stephen Thompson on Stone School Line. Ross and Shirley Smith of Brussels celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Saturday with friends, family, neighbours and beautiful weather. Shirley England, daughter of Jim and Isabelle of Lucknow, wed Ross Smith, son of Allan and Mable of Grey Township, on Oct. 3, 1953 at the Lucknow Presbyterian Church. The service was presided over by Rev. G.S. Bauleh. The couple was attended by Marjorie England and Larry Smith. After the wedding, the couple lived in Cambridge where Ross was a labourer and Shirley worked at Savage Shoes. The two retired in 1975. Ross and Shirley have four sons: Greg, Ken, Rob and Jeff. They have 12 grandchildren; Cherie, Julie, Jason, Lisa, Cory, Blair, Jamie, Christa, Michelle, Jolanda, Jenelle and Janessa and 12 great- grandchildren. The celebration was held at Ross and Shirley’s home in Brussels and it included their wedding attendants, Marjorie and Larry among many others .
