Brussels Bulls gain point in spite of injuries
Exams and injuries left a big dent
in the Bulls' lineup this weekend.
Friday night in Mt. Forest, the
Bulls were without five regulars
including the team's top goal scorer
Nate Bender. The situation was
even worse Saturday when the
Bulls hosted Walkerton. Seven
regulars were missing and veteran
Brian Zabel left the game sick,
while Jeremy Beirnes was tossed
early for a hit from behind.
Friday, the Bulls gave the
league's top jeam all they could
handle but came up just short
losing 2-0. The Patriots scored
midway through the second on a
power play. The Bulls thought they
had tied the game when Greg
Brown deflected a point shot into
the goal but referee Darryl
Crusaders
hold tie
The Drayton Comets scored two
unanswered third period goals, the
last with 15 seconds showing on
the clock, to tie the Brussels
Crusaders 5-5 Sunday in Drayton.
Scoring for Brussels were Jeff
McKee with two, Mike Bettles,
Corey McKee and Brian Campbell.
Derek Cooper stopped 40 shots for
the tie.
Due to suspensions, injury, and
overindulgence of the Christmas
spirit the Crusaders dressed only
nine skaters for the match.
Friday night the Crusaders.
travelled to Elora and lost an 8-3
decision o the first place Rocks.
Three goals in 73 seconds gave the
Rocks the first period lead they
held throughout the game. Dave
McKee with two and Brad Carter
scored for Brussels.
A first year club in the WOAA,
Elora's lineup includes five players
with major Junior A experience.
Friday night the Crusaders travel
to Wiarton while Sunday Elora
comes to town for a 7:30 start.
Blyth Bantams
earn 2 wins
The Blyth Bantams recorded two
wins and a tie in recent games.
Blyth travelled to Wingham
where they were victorious in a 4-3
close game.
Stephen Township supplied the
opposition for their next game. The
Blyth boys started quickly and built
up a 2-0 lead and led 3-1 late into
the third period. However,
'numerous penalties took their toll
and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Blyth travelled to Milverton and
hard work resulted in a 6-2 victory.
With Milverton holding a 2-1 lead,
the Blyth team went to work
scoring three goals late in the
second period and two more in the
third.
Blyth goals were scored by Jason
Rutledge, two; Chris Stewart, three;
Jeff Ferguson, one and Brad
Anderson, one.
Chris Bromley and Ron Abel-
Rinn shared the goaltending duties
and both turned in strong
performances.
Belgrave Atoms
get 8-3 win
A trip to Zurich last Saturday
netted an 8-3 notch on the win side
for the Belgrave Atoms.
The first period saw Belgrave
take the lead by one with Tyler
Fenton scoring two, assisted by
Kevin Hopf and Aaron Bakker on
the first, then Bakker again on the
second, only to have Zurich tie it
with two quick goals in the last
four minutes. Bakker put the team
ahead, however with 1:46 on the
clock. Assists this time went to
Hopf and Matt Cameron.
Belgrave owned the SCCOI1U pen-

Matthews ruled it was batted in
with a high stick. The Patriots got
the insurance marker in the final
two minutes of the middle frame on
a nice two on one.
Defenceplayer Zack Smith was
hit in the second period and
damaged ligaments in his shoulder.
The team is hoping he will be back
in time for playoffs.
The Bulls took on Walkerton
Saturday night and came away with
a 2-2 tie. The game was played in
Monkton because of a broomball
tournament in Brussels. A good
crowd was on hand to watch the
contest. Rob Harrison opened the
scoring for the Bulls with his first
goal of the season in the first
period. Greg McNevan then
redirected a Harrison slapshot in
the second to give Brussels a 2-1
lead, but Walkerton evened the
score and neither team could
register the go ahead goal although
Brussels had another goal called
back because of an interference call
in front of the net.
Coach Scott Pettigrew said he
was happy despite not winning.
"Lack of scoring has been our
problem all season and when you
take that many offensive players
out of our lineup you know it is
going to be tough. But we gave the
top club in the league all they
could handle and with a couple of
bounces could have beat
Walkerton."
The point leaves Brussels in
fourth place, five points back of
third place Hanover. The Bulls also
have a game in hand on the Barons.
Another tough weekend is in
store P.russels. The club travels
to Wingham Friday night and then
returns home Sunday to host Mt.
Forest at 2:00.
