The scripture reading was Luke 4, the sermon title was "Jesus is rejected at Nazareth." The service was led by Fred Vander Sterre. Mr. Vander Sterre told of Jesus in the desert, where he was being tempted by the devil for 40 days. Jesus had nothing to eat during those days, so the devil told him he's the Son of God, change the stone to bread. But Jesus said, "It is written, man does not live on bread alone." Then the devil took Jesus to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. The devil told him all of it would be his if he would bow down and serve him. Jesus answered "It is written, worship the Lord your God and serve Him only." The third time the devil tempted Jesus he took him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. He told him to jump to prove that God would take care of him. Jesus answered "It says: Do not put the Lord your God to the test." Jesus then went to his hometown of Nazareth to preach in the synagogue. Everyone in Nazareth was very excited about Jesus coming to preach because they had heard about the many things that Jesus had done. At first the people talked well of Jesus but then they said, isn't this Joseph's son? They started to doubt him because they couldn't believe that someone they knew before as an ordinary carpenter could claim to be the Son of God. Then the people of Nazareth started treating Jesus as the devil had. They tried to kill him by throwing him over a hill but Jesus just walked away with no harm done to him. At his next stop the people were amazed at his teaching and the authority he possessed in the synagogue. There was a man possessed by a demon. Jesus chased the demon away. From the synagogue Jesus went to Simon's house to find Simon's Continued on page 14
