Where food comes from
Students get a lesson on growing hothouse tomatoes during the "A Taste of Huron" display at
Seaforth last week. Nearly 1500 students from Huron County schools did everything from
operate a cream separator to grind flour as they learn that food doesn't come from a
supermarket shelf. Various volunteer groups planned the hands-on displays.

Junior Farmers announce exchange winners
Seventeen Junior Farmer
ambassadors will be off and
travelling in the next few months
on interprovincial and international
exchanges. The exciting
announcement of the trip winners
was made March 20 at the Annual
Banquet of the Junior Farmers'
Association of Ontario (JFAO) in
London.
Interprovincial trip winners
include Neil Robinson, University
of Guelph (originally Stormont);
Jennifer Cross, Prescott County;
and Ruth Ann McIntosh, Perth
County who will be attending the
"Do I hear two, two, two
thousand? Sold, the cows bought
the sports package for two
thousand dollars!" It sounds
absurd, but that was the scene at the
Junior Farmers' Association of
Ontario (JFAO) March Conference
held March 19-21 in London.
No, they didn't bring the cows to
town and cows have not taken up
an interest in bicycling. Instead,
250 March Conference delegates
dressed up like farm animals and
bid on packages of donated items
with donated money as a spirited
way of handing over the thousands
of dollars raised for Ontario Agri-
Food Education (OAFE).
The result was a fun-filled
morning and a cheque for $17,159
which will provide additional
support to OAFE in its endeavours
to educate school children about
the agriculture and food system.
Each year, the Junior Farmers'
Association of Ontario chooses a

throughout the year. OAFE was
chosen for 1992-93 because Junior
Farmers see the importance of
keeping young people educated
about agriculture.
Not only did the JFAO help with
this financial contribution, but also
by forming an important
partnership. "Many JFers have
been involved with local
educational activities in the past
and we are certain this will
continue and grow", said JFAO
President Brent Barton.

organizations similar to the Junior
Farmers' Association of Ontario.
The winners are all top calibre

be excellent ambassadors for this

said one of the judges following the
announcement.
JFAO trips are a long-standing

made possible by the many
sponsors, without whose
contributions these travel
opportunities would not be
possible.
