The news from
Deepest sympathies go out to
Emerson Mitchell and family on
the death of his brother Jack
Mitchell. The funeral for Jack was
held Sunday, April 4.

The shower for Sandra Sholdice
will be held April 16 at Duff's
United.
Baseball registration will take
place April 8 at the ball park.
Anyone attending the Harmony
Kings Barbershop Show on April 3
would have recognized Don
McDonald and Graeme Craig from
Walton. Graeme did a great job of
impersonating Ed Sullivan and also
showed his other hidden talent as a
fashion show commentator. I'm
sure Brylcreem will be hot on the
market once again as Don sang a
rendition of that old commercial.
Dianne McCallum and Patty
Banks were part of the show as
they sang with the Seaforth
Harmony Hi-lites.
Looking out their window at the

Rev. Banks greeted worshippers
at Duff s United Church April 4.
Ushers for April are Doug Fraser,
Ross Bennett and Greg Fritz.
The service started with a Palm
Sunday Processional with the
Sunday School pupils going down
the aisles waving African palm
branches. The Lenten Liturgy was
read by Joanne McDonald and son
Scott, who extinguished the sixth
candle. Rev. Banks discussed with
the children what Palm Sunday was
all about. They learned that
Hosanna means "Save Us".
Rev. Banks was joined by the
youth group, who led the
congregation on a journey through
Holy Week. He read scripture and

Champion
wins $1,479,810
contract
Champion Road Machinery Sales
Ltd., of Goderich, Ontario, won a
$1,479,810 contact to supply
National Defence with road
graders. Huron-Bruce Member of
Parliament and Parliamentary
Secretary to the Minister of
Agriculture, Murray Cardiff made
the announcement on behalf of
Supply and Services Minister Paul
Dick.
Mr. Cardiff explained that the
graders will be delivered to nine
Canadian Forces bases across the
country.
"I'm delighted to see a local
company, which offers Canadian-
made products, compete success-
fully for government business," he
said. "This contract is one of many
Champion has had with the federal
government in recent years. It's a
good example of the kinds of
opportunities available to Ontario
companies to bid for federal
contracts."
Delivery was expected for March
31.
noticed two robin-sized birds with
lots of yellow on their breasts.
They had never seen the birds
before and phoned CKNX to see if
they could tell them what they are.
From their description of the
birds the Brenies learned that the
birds are Grosbeaks.
The Banks family has two
bluejays, two doves, a lot of red
finches and blackbirds at the feeder
everyday.
What birds have you see around?
Wondering what spring was like
in other countries, Patty
approached Ty DeJong, who grew
up in the industrial city of
Eindhoven, NoordBrabant.
He remembers helping his uncle
dig up the garden in February and
planting it at the end of March.
Ty didn't have a garden in his
back yard but had pigeon pens as
his dad used to race them. Their
training would begin in spring. He
recalled the terrible flood in '53,
when the dikes broke and
thousands lost their lives or homes.
He and his friends would go and
pick pussy willows to sell door to
door to help raise money for the
flood victims.
He also said that sometimes the
canal would freeze and if it did the
school kids got half of the day off
to go skating.
McCallum read brief meditations
while Stacie Linton, Sharon
Godkin, Brandy and Tanner Banks,
Chad McCallum, Tarra Smith,
Shannon Davies and Heather Eckel
presented symbols pertaining to the
reading.
Easter Sunday Service will be
held at 11:30 at Walton and 10:00
in Bluevale.
Easter lilies placed in the church
were to be delivered to nursing
home shut-ins: Lavina Watson,
Sadie McDonald, Margery Ritchie,
Albina Gulutzen, Ernie Stevens and
Mildred Blake.

GRADE 2/3 CLASS
By Bradley Crawford and
Melissa Badley
Grade two/threes are buddying
up with the Kindergarten class to
make crafts. They are making
chocolate bunnies by finger
painting with chocolate pudding.
They're writing stories, making
games and puzzles, making a bird
in a nest, sewing paper eggs, and
making a paper mache egg. After
finger painting the bunny with the
chocolate pudding, the students got
to lick their fingers off.
Bradley's buddy is Matthew
Boulton. Melissa's buddy is Erica
Dietz.
Mrs. Vandendool's grade one/two
class has been busy these past few
days. They've been working on a
unit called Bounce, Roll and Spin.
This week, they experimented and
discovered what makes balls
bounce, which bounce best, how
long they bounce and all the
different ways to use bouncing
balls.
They have just started the "roll"
aspect, creating a painted picture
using a rolling marble.
They're beginning Easter
activities, and looking forward to
an "egg-citing" week to come.

Highway 86 was just a gravel road
then. Roads weren't plowed like

Everybody put their chains on

snow started to melt they would dig
tracks right to the bottom.
