Mark prisoner of .conscience week.
October. 15 to 21 was set aside as
Prisoner.of Conscience Week by the world- •
wide human. rights organization, Amnesty
International. The focus :this year was on
women.' in prison.
These women are of all ages, from all
walks of life. They are tradeunionists,
agricultural workers, office workers,
housewives, journalists, physicians and.
lawyers. Most are at the forefront of social
and political change, and : many are
leaders. Others are victims of human rights
violations simply because they are wives,
mothers, daughters or friends of , those
viewed as "dangerous".
Some women have disappeared without
a trace, suddenly taken from their home by
armed men, .pulled from a street car, or
forcibly abducted with their children.
The following three 'eases illustrate . the
many reasons for which women. have been
imprisoned
Hirut Desta/Ethiopia: 52 years old,
granddaughter of deposed .emperor Haille
-Selassie and head mistress of a girls'
school, detainedwithout charge ` or • trial
1974, adopted as Prisoner of Conscience by
the Palmerston, Amnesty group.
Lticia Pires de assuncao VIEGAS DE
SOUSA: primary school ''teacher, arrested
for non violent criticism of ' government
policies.
Thick nu TRI HAI/Viet Nam: 46 years
old, Buddhist nun, arrested with. 11 other
monks and nuns for opposition tohuman.
rights violations and government's dis-
crimination against religion, held in deten-
tion without charge or trial.. • „
• Three area Amnesty ' • International
groups have united to form one group. Pine
River, Lucknow ` and Kincardine are.,,,now
operating' as South Bruce Group 97. New
members are always welcome: The move-
ment is open to anyone who supports its
goals. Members are encouragedto partic-
ipate in a. variety of activities including
letterwriting on behalf of ...prisoners -and
fund raising.. ,

Until this fall, the closest Julie Moffat
had ever come to royalty was watching the
wedding of. Prince Charles and Lady Diana
on television.
On October 2, however, the 14 -year-old
was among the special guests at a dinner
held for the Queen in the Grand Ballroom
of the Sheraton Centre, Toronto.
A few days earlier, accompanied by her
mother, Mrs, Gordon Moffat, sister Kend-
ra; brother -Alex and Miss Margaret
Moffat, she attended Military Tattoo given
in the Queen's honour at Exhibition
Stadium.
Julie, whose grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Farish' Moffat of Wingham, won the
honour by being selected to represent the
young people in. her ' Swansea, Toronto,
neighbourhood.
A grade 8 graduate of the Swansea
Public School, she won the school's.
Community Service Award for outstanding •
involvement in the community and also
was voted top student by the teachers. at
the school.. The award includes a. scroll and
$25 cheque, but the dinner with the Queen,
which she attended together With Ward
One Alderman Derwyn Shea, was a special
honour this year.
Shea said there was no competition for
the • award this year • because Julie's
involvementin the community was "head
and shoulders" above' anyone else's. The'
cheerful .redhead keeps herself busy by J.
babysitting. walking younger children to
school, shopping for senior citizens and ,
visiting their homes to, talk.. '
She said she does not mind not being,,
paid for all the times she spends, "because
it's fun" and she makes new friends. She
added that she does' not plan to, cash the
cheque she received as part of the award.
since it bears the royal crest. The Moffats
also collect stamps and books about the
royal family.
Julie is attending Humberside Collegiate
this fall where she, is in grade 9.
Nurses not satisfied with proposal...
from page 4 , 1,
If the board of health's proposal was
accepted even those nurses receiving
the greatestinc.reases would be one
year behind other health units in '19854
and the Others in the bargaining unit
would remain in an extremely poor
financial situation.
Non -monetary issues which have
been of great importance to the Nurses
for years, have consistently been
ignored by the county, says the state-
ment. The nurses` proposals have fallen
on deaf ears for each of the three years
bargaining has occurred.
Studies commissioned by the county
in 1976 and 1979 indicate Bruce County
health nurses were substantially under-
paid. Nothing has ever ' been done to
rectify that situation. It is now time for
change, the nurses say.
