If you have spectacles which are no longer useful — have them
ready for the Lions when they call with the peanuts. These eye-
glasses will be sent to India where virtually every pair will be a
boon to some needy man or woman.
Are you looking for a different
Christmas card? Then your an-
swer may be the cards that are
printed and sold by the Canadian
Save the Children Fund, These
cards are "different" in that they
were designed, planned and print-
ed in Canada for the benefit of
Canadian charity,
The layout, art-work and typo-
graphy of thp cards is by Frank
Davies, the Christmas carol verses
have been carefully checked and

The cause is really a worthy one
The Canadian Save the. Children
Fund is a small organization, con-
sisting of voluntary groups in cities
and towns across Canada, which
has operated for forty years to im-
prove the conditions of children
everywhere in the world, regardless
of race or creed.
Last year, almost a quarter of a
million dollars was raised in Can-
ada, to carry on the work of the
Fund. There are many ways in
which the Fund works. Just this
month, a new day nursery was
opened in Tricarieo, Italy, built
largely out of contributions made

by Canadians, in a large part from
donations of school children. There
is a magnificent hospital at Fier-
magor (with wings built from Ca-
nadian gifts) which specializes in
the treatment of bone malform-
ations in children „ , there are
model farms in Greece and lepro-
sariums and TB sanitariufris in
Korea, This, in addition to the
sponsorship plan whereby a Ca-
nadian may "adopt" a child for
$50.00 a year.
The achievements of the Fund,
remarkable by any standard, are
even more newsworthy when you
consider that the CSCF operates
through voluntary committees and
without benefit of Government
grants or support. It also •makes
it quite evident why the Fund must
look to new ways of raising money
such as the sale of these
Christmas cards.
OYSTERS, like clams are har-
vested commercially on both east
and west coasts. The Atlantic
oyster is principally marketed in
the shell and is graded according
to shape, It is available in eastern
and central Canada during the fall
and• early winter months, The
Pacific oyster tends to be larger
than the Atlantic variety and has
a brittle shell, It is marketed as
shucked meat, In west coast
centres it is available most of the
year, although the harvest is small
during the summer.
